Yesterday… and Today.

A lot of hardcore kids hate The Beatles. As one who does not, I’ve had many, many arguments about them. And hey, I understand. It’s hard to accept that your parents music managed to not only be totally counter culture but totally mainstream in the same breath. But The Beatles really did manage to do both things. Case in point, the Yesterday… and Today lp. Decapitated baby dolls, raw meat, and butcher’s smocks. That’s some straight Carnivore style. In 1966. On the Fab Four.

This was quickly taken out of circulation and pasted over with a new cover, so original versions of this record quickly became quite the collectors item. So that’s another one to blame the Beatles for. And apparently they also pioneered the colored vinyl craze, as the version above is labeled as being on clear yellow. This next one’s already ended, but I wanted to give you all a peek at the pink…

And finally a nice creamy white.

Ok, so I’m totally kidding. You can’t actually chalk record collecting and colored vinyl up to the Beatles. These are all from a mono “re-release”, and by “re-release” I’m going to assume the sellers all mean “bootleg”, as I can’t find a single thing about the butcher shop cover ever being officially re-released on colored vinyl. But they still sell in the $30-$40 range, which is a bargain considering the starting price that even a beat up original will get posted with…

According to this price guide, a 3rd state mono version like the one above is only worth half of the starting bid on the one posted above, and that’s assuming mint condition. But that’s what happens when you have a record this rare and this well known: anyone who finds a copy in Aunt Mary’s closet sees dollar signs. Personally, I’d see a nice frame and a spot on my wall…
