Just read in a couple of places that Jerry Williams died. For those of you not familiar, Jerry was a key figure in the burgeoning early 80s NYHC scene, recording bands at his 171A studio and doing sound at CBGB, as well as playing guitar in Bloodclot (with a pre-Cro-Mags John Joseph) and later on with Irate (with a post-Straight Ahead Tommy Carroll). He produced records for the Bad Brains, Cro-Mags, Murphy’s Law, Token Entry and a ton more, including the slightly important cassette below…

was that Bad Brains release originally cassette only or is there a 1st press LP from the same time period?
Also, anyone know how to tell a ‘first press’ cassette copy?
Cassette only. It didn’t come on vinyl until the late 80s. The first vinyl press was called “Attitude” and was released by In Effect with different cover art, then it was repressed by Dutch East in the early 90s with similar art to the current vinyl press.
I’m sure there’s no way to tell an absolute original of the tape, but early copies are colored cassettes (red/green/yellow) and later ones are clear.
i thought the In Effect was only CD. Didnt We Bite make the vinyl version?
if cats go to heaven
then jerry will be there,
with his guitar, “mystery juice”
and a fat green bud
-too bad for us now
well said, m, well said. gonna miss him awful
I knew Jerry for years before I found out that he had produced the Bad Brains ROIR Cassette. When I found out I asked him how he had managed to capture them better than anyone else ever had or has … And he told me that when he was recording them they had certain advantages that they did not have when they were recording other albums.
Some where to live.
I only found out that Jerry has died from this web site. The mutual friend I had with Jerry died two years ago.
Live long.
And earn your rest.
Jerry did.
