Seriously, not only on VN but generally. That fat wanker that did AHC documentary, he interviewed GnR lad but on the DK note there was maybe a 4 seconds mention that they existed. I want to see more Biafra on the screen.
DK were, in my humble opinion, the best early West Coast band. There’s lots of talk and appreciation going on around let’s say BF, don’t get me wrong, BF are unfuckwithable, but DK are just a tiny bit better at just about everything BF has ever done. Let’s see:
Band name:
Black Flag is a great name but considering these were American bands I’d say in the early 80s “Dead Kennedys” would piss a lot more people off. EDGE: DK
Music:
BF were amazing in the early stage and then went a bit (or more than a bit) downhill into the wierd arse instrumental rubbish or even worse: Henry’s poetry. DK has never done that. I love every single one of the DK releases. Not to mention that DK sound, in all its weird greatness, has never been replicated (not by any band I’ve heard) while Morris goes around with OFF! sounding exactly like the 1st BF 7″ EDGE: DK
Lyrics:
Not one of the few lads that ever wrote for the BF can come within a 1000 yards of the Biafra’s writing genius. I’d be happy if you could prove me wrong but for now, EDGE: DK
Artwork/Packagng:
Winston vs Pettibon seems like a very even match up. Both guys are different in style but both came up with equally iconic imagery that not only stood the test of time but inspired so many that came after. In the art department I’d say both bands are dead even however, if you look at the packaging the DK can only be topped by some of the Crass Records releases. Small booklets, big booklets, small posters, big posters, controversial posters, banned content, the list never ends. If the art on itself was dead even in the art/packaging combined category EDGE: clearly goes to DK
Lifestyle:
BF lived in a church but Biafra run for the Govna of Cali. I really couldn’t decide which one should be the winner here. I was gonna go for dead even in this category but on the second thought there were about 10,000 squatters bands squatting all sorts of crazy places. How many bands do you know with members running for the high government posts? EDGE: DK
Stage Presence / Gig Mayhem:
I can’t be arsed to compare the whole band because the BF line up changed way too often + I have never been to any of the early 80s gigs of either of this band so rather than basing my opinions on youtube videos I will leave this section for you. Feel free to comment.
In a nutshell, BF are one of the most if not THE MOST influential band that ever come out of the HC scene. Due to their notoriety and persistance they created the road map that all the other bands in the USHC then followed. They are one of my favourite bands and in no way did I attempt to take anything away from them. I simply wanted to point out that DK, despite their obvious greatness, seem to get forgotten a lot of the time, like in that Double Cross “the most influential band” poll.
Oh yeah. Almost forgot. This being the VN. Here’s state_of_the_nation bringing you the 1st press of DAMAGED that is slightly damaged (spine split) but very cheap compared to other $45-$80 BINs that are out there right now. Hopefully for you it will stay that way.
and here’s gpmusic with the 1st US pressing of the 1st DK LP. It was the 1st US pressing but 128th worldwide pressing because that record was being released all over Europe and wherever else before any of the US labels wanted to touch it. This, with one day to go is sitting at $8. That is EIGHT DOLLARS. That’s an insult to this great release. On a side note: I heard Biafra was pissed off with that orange cover.
and if you are still hungry for more, which you should be (record wise, food wise is a cardinal sin) here’s a lovely lot sold by eddieville that could kick start your DK collection in just one swift click of that PAY NOW button (assuming you win this)

Wait……regardless of who likes Black Flag or The Dead Kennedys…..I’m pretty sure you confused the shit out of everyone. We’re music lovers not scientists. Take it down a notch….what’s going on with VN lately???
Excellent post and great points. I do need to listen to DK more than I currently do…
Dead Kennedys suck.
says a guy who also doesn’t like Slayer….
(one love Tre) :)))
Dead Kennedys were my favorite band in the 10th and 11th grades. I still like them but I probably like Black Flag better overall now.
Pretty sure this was a legality reason due in part to the band fighting over the rights.
great post. reminds me to listen to more DK. is there an album that compiles all the early singles?
mbske:
Not everyone. Just you it seems.
Tre:
*_*
martin:
Not really a singles album per se but it does have a lot of stuff that came out on the 7″s in different versions plus some unreleased tracks if I remember correctly:
Give Me Convenience or Give Me Death
I think I’m gonna pop this on right now.
