What do you know about Alert? Here’s what I know. Mike Puffer is a dude. So is Keith Freeman. Those dudes are positive straight edge. Seriously, almost too positive. Nah, just kidding. Great dudes. Puffer is also a vegan. What gives? Vegan Straight Edge? Dude’s an anachronism. I can hang. He also has been posting up for us on skatenoize.com. I highly suggest checking out what he has to say. LOTS of good stuff. Some funny quips too. And if you came for vinyl, well, adamlpetty has what you need (only has one feedback, mind you). Here you’ll get the limited edition 2008 demo pressed on red wax. Limited to 100, this one is #85. I’m fairly positive this was printed up for a fest or a release gig, but I can’t exactly recall which. This one is cheap and ending soon, better snatch it up. I expect big things from this band. Big things.

August 21 At Anchors Up
I’m not going to lie. Last night was a fucking long night. Going into the gig, I was expecting a 6 band still that started at 6pm. On, Get The Most, No Tolerance, Hands Tied, Mindset and The Rival Mob. This was not what I got. Pat Flynn did his best to keep the gig on track, but due to nasty traffic in NYC (and a baby pooping in the median …), none of the out of town bands arrived until close to 830. Casali and I showed up at 6 ready to party. We brought the remaining Tee Till Death tshirts us. Hooked up some friends, sold a few. Not sure how many even remain now. I think just a few mediums and XLs. This was all good. Good chats with the Montreal Straight Edge crew, Karl X Beyond was in the house.
Since the out of town bands were so far off, Pat convinced a few local bands to do their thing. We were then treated to a scabby Alert lineup (Mike, Keith, Brendan from Rival Mobs and a dude I didn’t get to meet unfortunately). I’m guessing they never once played together on stage. But since they were all in the same room, we got the mosh. Not bad. Not super tight, but hey, what more can you ask for? Then Free Spirit played a few tunes. Another unsuspecting treat for this gig. We were lucky that Gil, Jack, Doug, Hudon & Kenny were all in the house. Great set from these dudes, as always. A strong showing from the Lockin Out crew never hurts either.
Then No Tolerance kicked it in. Again, the Free Spirit/Rival Mob / Step Forward crew was going ape shit, as was a majority of the crowd. Something about DFJ with a mic in his hands is a recipe for mosh. Boston Straight Edge still on top!
At this point, despite a smaller crowd than I would have expected, things really started to heat up. Anchors Up is always muggy and hot, no matter what the weather conditions. This was evident by the end of No Tolerance’s set. Next up was the first out of town act, Get The Most. It’s hard coming thousands of miles playing to a crowd that has possibly never seen you or even heard you before. But these dudes did it proper. It doesn’t hurt that some of this crew had started out in Blue Monday and Go It Alone. Quality mosh.
Make sure you bid on these Get The Most lps from goldenempirepto. It’s a benefit. Do not bid this Get The Most Lp from dnzgsgrl. As noted previously, this person is high.
Next up was On. I always forget that Jim Champion sings for this band. He obviously knows his way around a stage and held it down last night. Lots of great songs. And it kept getting hotter and hotter. At some point during this set, I think kids started losing steam. Hell, even Karl X Beyond was slowing down his mosh. The line at the White Hen Pantry next door kept getting longer and longer.
Hands Tied was up next. I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect. Tim, Ed, The Kreep, Gordo and Mike from Mindset. Great crew, but wasn’t sure how it would all go. Needless to say, I was not disappointed. I only ever caught Hands Tied during the 2003 reunion tour. The show I saw was in some gig spot in Connecticut. It wasn’t the most appealing place for a gig. The crowd wasn’t into it, and I think that reflected on the Hands Tied set. BUT fast forward 7 years. Anchors Up was ready and amped. The crowd showed Hands Tied lots of love, and the new songs even sounded pretty good live. I just keep expecting them to sound faster.
Next up was Mindset. It was probably close to 11 or 1130pm before they hit the stage. Most kids seemed pretty wiped out. Lots of kids fell out of the building and into the parking lot. They lost because the Mindset set was intense. Ev knows how to handle himself behind the mic. Lots of emotion, lots of movement. I don’t think he ever stood still once. He obviously has way more ups than me.
Finally, The Rival Mob hit the stage. I was almost positive that their set couldn’t be as outrageous as their new tshirt design. Track down the picture, it’s worth it. But the set was super crazy. Brendan was talking some utter nonsense at points. Many shout outs to local water parks. A little bummed that Aquaboggan didn’t get a mention… Great set. And the new songs sounded great. They wrapped it up and it was 1230.
Fuck, long gig. Somehow, a gig turned into a fest. But all in all, great gig. Lots of dudes in the house, good times.
What about kilowatjacafonis1 being the dude who buys limited fest vinyl and then flips it on ebay. Every single one of his auctions up now meets that criteria. And of course, unwashed, unworn, unplayed. Sad.
Please note, The Rival Mob still have some of the purple EPs with them. And you may even be able to pick them up from Six Feet Under Records. Just an FYI.
ALERT!
If you haven’t heard Alert yet, you must be living in a yurt in the middle of Big Sur.
I can’t think of any other reason you would have missed out on this crew.
Seriously.
This band is all about fun. They bring it back like the late 80s. No one takes themselves to seriously, but pride in their actions is apparent. Lots of Straight Edge pride up on this one.
This lot is for the demo pressed on wax. I’m 90% positive it only came on clear and black, and both colors had an equal amount pressed. What’s odd is that the record label is some joint from Florida that I just can’t recall. I honestly would have expected a Western Mass label, but no.
Also, the cover is drawn up by Jay Jacoby. You’ve seen his work before, trust me. Great dude with a good eye (and a steady hand) for what bands want and deserve.
I suggest snapping this up. In about 6 months, you’ll be kicking yourself if you don’t. Trust me on that one.
