With it being Thanksgiving and all, I figured I would share this apparent holiday tradition, Arlo Guthrie’s “Alice’s Restaurant.” My brother told me about this one a few years back, and though I was familiar with the song, I didn’t realize that airing it on Thanksgiving was a thing that many radio stations do, as a tradition. Apparently, the story is that at 18, Arlo was arrested for illegally dumping trash after a Thanksgiving meal when he and a buddy discovered that the local dump in Stockbridge, Massachusetts was closed for the holiday. They plead guilty, and then after, this crime of littering, was apparently enough to have him deemed unfit for military service, and ended up not being drafted into the Vietnam war. The song is long, clocking in around 18+ minutes, but it’s a decent, funny story, that ended up being a big anti war hit. Sheerluck1 has a copy up for auction pretty cheap.
