I was introduced to Mates Of State a few years back. I’m pretty sure it was by Pandora. I had been surfing for Matt & Kim like artists when I wound up on Mates Of State. Now this band is NOT hardcore whatsoever so don’t get it confused.

However, they are a shining example of great indie rock. I love that female fronted indie rock sound. Not too laid back and not over the top with energy. Just a good drive with a few haunting tones. Plus the indie label that does all their tunes, Barsuck Records out of Seattle, WA has turned me on to a TON of other great sounding artists. Rilo Kiley, Harvey Danger, Menomena, Chris Walla (solo stuff), Say Hi … And you can find some of those bigger acts on this label too. Everything from Nada Surf to Death Cab For Cutie to They Might Be Giants.

I suggest looking into this band AND supporting this indie label. Good stuff going on here. Feel free to pick up this out of print color vinyl while you are at it.
