Insert clever Bosstones related title here

In the month or so that I have been posting here on Vinyl Noize, one thing I have been really really really trying hard to NOT do is post about records that I don’t like. I’ll be honest, it would be a lot easier for me to pull off some nights. I am going to give in a little here though for this Bosstones LP from smashdc!. I was never a fan of ska. To be honest, it confused me. I saw all the big cartoon drawings of skinheads, and I saw these real life monsters at shows. So when ska was described to me as “yeah know, skinhead music,” goofy bouncy music with horns is not what I expected. My first exposure to ska came from the mistake of a purchase below, now being sold by 2009id.

I can almost remember exactly what happened. I was flipping thru the records at Newbury Comics, and came across this LP with those cartoon skinheads I mentioned before, this time they were joined by some chicks, and for some reason, some dudes with ties on… whatever. There’s skinheads, this HAS to be good. My friend John looks at me, “You like ska?” This is where the above quote about “skinhead music” comes from. I decided that I wanted to give this whole ska thing a shot, and bought the LP. I took it home, and confusion set it. I did not like it.

Fast forward a little bit, and Bosstones are the shit. I remembered the name from the comp. I thought it was a pretty cool name for a band from Boston. I had heard of Dicky Barrett’s BHC pedigree, but, like the comp, this was just not cutting it for me. They blew up pretty quick around here, and I know that the Bosstones were a gateway band for a lot of kids in the area. So I always felt bad poo-pooing on them all the time. Eh. I need to write about something awesome now.

Ska Core, The Red Sox & More…

I think it was 2-3 years ago now that Slapshot played one night of the Mighty Mighty Bosstones ‘Home Town Throwdown’ at the Middle East. I did merch that night and sold a ton of stuff which was nice, but it was awesome to have a few guys from the Bosstones come over and buy shirts. I didnt really get a chance to check out the Bosstones merch until after the show, but when I did I picked up a ‘Throwdown’ shirt and a copy of this 7″. Mine is on black vinyl and I think it was out of 1000 and if I remember correct the white vinly might have been an exclusive to one of the online merch companies, but I’m not sure.

Either way I think that the prices that frazierauctions is asking are kind of high, but maybe you dont. I actually never even listened to this. When I bought it I was having problems with my turntable and I think it got filed away and forgotten about until just now. Maybe I’ll go back and dig it out!

BOSSTONES 7″, Pin-Up, Ad & Promo Fodder…

Man I loved the Bosstones back in the day. I remember my mom and dad owned a small record store and we got promo cassettes of 3 upcoming Taang! releases…. Maelstrom ‘Step One’, Slapshot ‘Sudden Death Overtime’ and the Mighty Mighty Bosstones ‘Devils Night Out’. I played the hell out of the 3 tapes and they became 3 of my favorite bands. I had a sweatshirt with all 3 band logos drawn on it and I got to see the 3 of them play together a few times too!

Present day I’m the king of Slapshot merch, but back in the early 90′s I had many Bosstones pictures, posters & flyers on my bedroom wall. I had RIP Magazine pinup of the whole band on my wall and the Converse ad with the picture of Dicky on it was hanging on my door right next to the GAP ad featuring Henry Rollins in his hooded T-shirt!

The Bosstones/Kiss split 7″ was actually the first record I sold when I put my list up on www.HowsYourEdge.com, but unfortunantly it got to the guy and it was broken and I had to give him his money back which sucked!

I never had that Bosstones notepad, which I assume was a promo item, but it is pretty cool and its the kind of thing that if I did have back then I would have kept it squirled away somewhere and I would still have it today!

Regular Boys Haircut Please?

tofudonuts is not something I would buy… this record however is something I would buy.

My only question… does anyone know anything about the pressing info on it? Sellers says that Impact Unit only had a demo which I assume was a cassette only thing and was later pressed as a 7″ after the Bosstones got popular, but I dont know if thats factual or not.

I used to have a copy of this with a black, white & red cover and I think the lables were black & red too, but I’m not positive. Mine was also on Crucial Response, but I traded or sold it a long time ago. For less than a dollar with less than a day left I might bid on this one.

At the Gallery East show Sunday just standing around waiting for DYS to finish setting up I was talking to Mike from Refuse Resist and when I turned around there was Dicky Barret standing there. As much as I understand why he was there it was still a shock because hes kind of more ‘famous’ than the others people there were there. I wanted to go over and say “Are you the guy from the Jimmy Kimmal show” but I didn’t. I was really hoping that DYS would cover an Impact Unit song, but no such luck. Dicky introduced DYS and then about 3 songs in he disapeared.

SKA… SKA… SKA…

More test presses straight from The Taang! Vaults!

This time you can pick up TEST PRESSES of Devils Night Out and More Noise & Other Disturbances. Theres a lot of cool pressing varaiations, color vinyls, reissues and what not of a lot of Bosstones stuff and it would be an awesome collection to put together. I would think that these 2 would be some of the harder to find ones.

Great records by a Great band from a Great city… bid now!
