One Boss Test Press.

We end Test Press Tuesday in a fashion only slightly less suspect than how we opened. You see, whiteiiis is selling off what is labeled as an original Bruce Springsteen “Born To Run” test press…

This could have been the copy that Bruce listened to in the studio when it was first cut onto vinyl. It was a working copy, the studio had paper taped to the back of the album that has been removed, they even wrote on the back cover itself. This copy is before the test pressings were made, before the labels, looks like they weren’t sure which side would be side 1, they are reversed on this label. Contains all the music that the album Born To Run has on it. It has MCR written in the tail off.

So in other words, this might be a test press of the test press? I dunno, I’d feel better about this one if there was even the slightest hint of authentication. Not that I’m saying this is a fake or something; the cover is definitely a mock up, as you can see the notes on it for where the album tracks and lyrics go, but an actual test press? I dunno. It’s something for sure, I’m just not so sure what. On the whole though, this is definitely a pretty cool item. I don’t know about it being a $500 item without better information, but a pretty cool item all the same.

Born To Run

The last time I was getting tattooed by Mike Lussier, he was playing his usual tunes: a mix of Gaslight Anthem, Bad Religion and a few others. I can hang. I am into those bands. But then Bruce Springsteen shuffled up. I immediately pulled the juvenile punk act and dissed it for not being punk. Of course, most people would cite Bruce Springsteen playing CBGBs back before I was born … Sure, that’s appropriate here. But Mike stood standfast and claimed the Boss was cool. I finally gave into temptation the other day and started listening to the albums. Mike is a good dude so I decided I should follow up on his suggestions. Initially, I proved myself right. Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J.** is pretty bad. Maybe 2-3 good tracks and then a lot of “I wish I was Bob Dylan” wanking. Pass. And WOW, The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle is just not good. Is that disco? Is that funk? No idea, it’s just bad.

And then I started playing Born To Run. That’s when it kicked in, and I understood. This music IS good. It also appears this was Bruce’s big commercial success album too. The one that put his name up in lights. I can dig it. Thunder Road — you’re moshing. Ok, not really moshing, but that’s a damn fine song. No doubt. 35 years later, it still stands up.

Go ahead and grab this half-speed master version. Seems like a weird technology, but it supposedly makes the music sound that much more fantastic. Of course, it isn’t played at half-speed, fear not.

Or grab this excellent looking JP press. Shout outs to JayBil.

And if you just want the Born To Run single, you can get that too. The b-side, Meeting Across The River isn’t quite the banger Born To Run is, but it’s still quite good.

** No disrespect to my Asbury Park friends.
