Live…Suburbia! Book Giveaway

Time for another contest! This time for Anthony Pappalardo(of Radio Silence, TYF, IME fame) and Max G. Morton’s(of 23, Indestructible Wolves of The Apocalypse Junkyard fame) new book Live … Suburbia!

If you haven’t heard of the book here is a brief intro of what to expect.

Live…Suburbia! is a collection of stories and images of the post-1960s subcultures that define America. It’s kids taking their urethane wheels to empty pools; picking British Punk in broad downstrokes and creating Hardcore. Live…Suburbia! is dedicated to denim devils twirling butterfly knives and hasty tags thrown down with Rust-Oleum touch-up paint stolen from your parent’s garage.

Documenting American subculture through images and anecdotes, from the juvenile KISS Army in oil-based face paint to the year punk broke, Live… Suburbia! celebrates the evolution of the teenage explorer. Rushing through years packed with ninjas, spike gauntlets, BMX dirt jumps, seven-ply skateboards, bathroom mohawks, skinheads, the straight edge, basement DJs, graffiti murals behind supermarkets, we finally arrive in the 1990s where it all collides.

If you’re in the NYC area please check out the Book Lauch party with a performance by Supertouch!
Friday September 23rd 6-9pm
Drinks will be served
@ powerHouse Arena

Making a Scene Book Giveaway!

By now you have probably heard about the upcoming re-release of Bri Hurley`s 1989 “Making a Scene” now expanded and being put out by Chris Daily. If you havent pre-ordered it yet you need to get on that. There is a reason this book is so highly sought after and if Chris`s finished product is half as good as his book on the Anthrax club it will be nothing short of amazing.

Lucky for us Chris is gracing us with a copy of his book to give away on the site. There will be separate copies for TeeTillDeath and VinylNoize so you have two chances to enter.

Here is how this contest is going to work. Twitter/Facebook style contest. There are very few steps involved.

1) First “Like” the “Making a Scene on Facebook” page.

2) Retweet this message Pre-order “Making a Scene:Expanded Edition” Now!! http://bit.ly/oW0q1R @vinylnoize #VNcontest

That’s it. Simple eh? We’ll pick a winner one week from today. To win you just have to meet BOTH requirements above. Easy as that! Good luck.

If you havent pre-ordered yet, what are you waiting for? The foreword is by Freddy Madball so that should pretty much seal the deal. If you already preordered and end up winning the contest then you will already have your best friends Xmas present ready to go. win/win

H2O, dude.

This is definitely NOT the record I would most likely purchase from chrismin in 2010. However, in 1997, I certainly owned and listened to this record. It wasn’t my favorite H2O record (the first ‘seveninch’ is) but it was cool, I guess. What stands out is the story behind the cover art. It was some sort of a contest, though I don’t remember the details, and the best entry ended up as the cover artist and got their photo on the back cover. The whole thing is surreal to think about, but, it happened.

The artist ended up being a kid from the Jersey Shore who I knew, James Broderick, but we all knew him by his nickname… Sperm. Great dude who was not only into hardcore super young, but was an insane skater. Think he was sponsored for a while and did a lot of cool stuff with it. No idea where he is now, but on the very rare occasion that this record crosses my path, I think of him.

*Please stop and think about a contest being run to do the cover art for a hardcore record. Really? Maybe 2011 is the year this idea should come back. Or maybe not.
