Adult Books

I caught X on Friday here in Minneapolis, so I wanted to post something from them. It was a sweet show, the crowd was a trip! So many moms, dads and even grandparents! But I love seeing people my parent’s age playing in a punk band and still rocking out and doing it well! Some girl gave Exene an apron as a gift. The younger kids (this was a 21+ show but I’m sure real punks have fake ID’s) started a massive push-pit that totally exploded during “We’re Desperate”.

X played all of ‘Los Angeles’, ‘Adult Books’ 7″, and a bunch of other tracks from later LP’s that I didn’t know all of. Exene and John were rocking out and had tons of energy, Billy Zoom didn’t even break a sweat, just stood there motionless playing his guitar flawlessly like a robot. I guess he’s always done that but now it’s even more noticable since he’s older. The “opening act” was the 1985 movie ‘Unheard Music’,  about the band, which I’ve never seen before and I ended up enjoying.

Anyway, I wanted to post a good, original pressing of “Adult Books” on Dangerohouse, but this is the only one I could find. It’s missing the cover and is in not exactly minty shape but smmat gives an honest description and is taking offers so someone could probably get a deal on this.

Btw, does anyone remember Auntie Christ? It was a band on Lookout! Exene was in, in the 1990′s. I can’t remember if it was awful or not, anyone a big fan?

Dangerhouse kbd oop rare!

More missing pieces for your Dangerhouse collection up this week, courtesy of a couple different sellers. First we get the rarest DH release from Rhino 39, courtesy of c0chise69. Great proto-hc, it’s too bad they never made another record that sounded like this.

And mr. state-children shows us that when it rains it pours (check his other auctions for some heaters), with two of the best on the label, and the coolest looking record ever on any label.

Dangerhouse collection

A nice little set of Dangerhouse singles, ending tomorrow, courtesy of adversewind.

Some cool variants here (rare Alleycats “lounge” sleeve, green wax Black Randy) that don’t pop up too much. Start a collection or fill some holes… to quote Phil Lynott, “You can do anything you want to do.”

Avengers – We Are The One

Another one for your Dangerhouse collection… if a few more pop up soon you can have a complete set courtesy of my posts ;)

This is the second version of the Avengers ep, with the more common “target” sleeve, as opposed to the original “crucifix” sleeve. As far as I know this is the only Dangerhouse sleeve variation, and I’m not sure why they changed the art between pressings. This copy is complete with the original bag/sticker, which doesn’t turn up much.

WFMU charity auctions

WFMU is a really cool independent radio station out of New Jersey. If you’re a NYHC fan you have probably some live sets of bands that were recorded there, and if you’re a record collector around the northeast you may have been to their record fair (which btw, is coming up in a couple weeks and I encourage anyone who can to attend, I’ll be selling a lot of cool shit along with a couple friends). Or if you’re a comedy fan, you probably know Tom Scharpling’s The Best Show on WFMU radio show. Anyways, it looks like they are runnining a bunch of charity auctions on ebay, and they have a bunch of cool records up in addition to other music swag. Check out the listings at wfmu_auction on ebay.

Here are a couple cool things they have up for sale…

First is another one for your Dangerhouse collction — the Randoms Let’s Get Rid Of New York single, the first release on the label. About 2000 pressed, and what they don’t mention in the listing that’s kind of cool is that it still has the original baggie, something they did with a lot of Dangerhouse releases to set them apart from the pack (the folded comic book-style bag with a little dot sealing it).

Next up is a copy of The Worst’s self-titled lp, straight outta the Jersey shore. I guess these Mutha label bands didn’t get much coverage back in the day, but thanks to the collecting world things have come around and all of the label’s early HC releases are pretty popular now (and pretty expensive). This lp is a great punk-turns-hardcore release, they really have some excellent playing chops on this one.

More Dangerhouse

I just realized I’ve pretty much only posted LA punk records in the past few days. Welp, here are a couple more tasty LA area platters from velotis, to round out your Dangerhouse collection…

Early LA at its finest — Alleycats is probably my preferred record of the two, but they Eyes ain’t no slouch either. Alleycats comes in 2 sleeves, this one being the more common “live photo” version. Eyes features Dangerhouse main man Dave Brown, who replaced future Go-Go Charlotte Caffey on keys. Punk rock history? Maybe…

AVENGERS – We Are The One 7″

Looks like Mr. zero.street either got a killer collection in his store, or is thinning out his collection — TONS of great punk singles up right now. I used to trade with him back in the Rev trade board days, always a great guy to deal with.

If there’s only one Dangerhouse 7″ you ever really need to own, this is probably it. Classic tunes, classic design, and the of course the best record label ever. The “crucifix” sleeve is the version to get, the 2nd “target” sleeve version is just not as cool looking (though he coincidentally has the scarce red vinyl target sleeve up as well).

I saw these guys live a few weeks ago, and while the tunes are great, their vibe is totally ruined by their drummer’s extremely un-punk playing style. Bummer.

Dangerhouse

Generation Records outta NYC (good store, I recommend stopping there when you’re in the city) has some tasty platters up for auction, including a few off of the best record label ever, Dangerhouse. Here are a couple of my faves…

First up — the Weirdos We Got The Neutron Bomb, which IMO is the best release on the label and one of the best 2-siders in the history of punk music. Both sides are just classic anthemic punk, nothing more nothing less. It was a real treat seeing Negative Approach cover “Solitary Confinement” a month or two ago in Boston.

Next is X’s debut, Adult Books. The title track is a little tame compared to the rockin’ punk that was to come later from them, but the B-side “We’re Desperate” makes up for it nicely. As with most Dangerhouse releases, the art on this is really top-notch and I love when bands use part of the photo to add their name/logo in (also see: AF United Blood 7″).

The opening bids are very reasonable and these are from old deadstock, so get those bids in.

YES LA test pressing

Extremely cool test press version of this classic comp. Since all 2,000 copies of the comp were pressed on clear vinyl with a screen printed B-side, the test press is extra desirable since it’s the only way to get it on a different color of vinyl. Dangerhouse tests don’t pop up much, and when they do they go for TONS, so I’m sure this thing will be through the roof in no time at all.

A friend of mine is selling this, and I’m guessing the money will go towards vintage tiki items for his apartment. Bid away.

YES LA comp LP

Dangerhouse is, in my opinion, the best record label ever. They set the bar high for both music and design aesthetic; and this LP is possibly the high point of their 16 releases. It was released in 1979 and its title was sort of a piss-take on the previous year’s “No New York” no wave compilation. All of the songs are top shelf material for each respective band, except for the Eyes track, which I think is the worst song on the record (but that’s like trying to pick your least favorite flavor of ice cream).

2000 pressed, the background screen is always green but the text comes in a few different colors—this black copy is one of the more common versions. The price is pretty reasonable right now, if you can scoop this for $80–100 you’re doing good.

SCREAMERS – 7/7/77 12″

Recent bootleg of Screamers studio material, probably the best sounding Screamers boot I’ve ever heard [and there are lots of them (of which 99.9% of them suck bad.)] This LP is allegedly limited to 300,  allegedly authorized by the band and allegedly sourced from original tapes, though contact with two original members indicates that it is indeed not authorized.

The booter has been selling them at extortionate prices ($18/wholesale and $25-30 retail) so this low starting price/non-Buy It Now auction is cool, and could save you some dough as a buyer. Have at it.
