Double O TPThurs.

Ex-Extorts guitarist “housatonic” has been leaking some pretty cool stuff out of his collection lately. I can’t say this is one of my favorites in the harDCore canon — imo this record occupies a spot somewhere in the murky depths of “good but not great” DC stuff like the Iron Cross 7″ers or the Artificial Peace/Exiled split — but as we all know, rarity often trumps quality in the realm of test press collecting. That being said, Double O has a couple of really great demo tapes, which would make for a nice archival release on Dichord (nudge nudge, wink wink).

SOA for TPT

Here’s a nice slice of wax from housatonic, aka ex-Meatmen guitarist Lyle Preslar.

Normally I think test press collecting is pretty boring, though I do think it’s cool when they come with proper sleeves and inserts — it makes them slightly more desirable in my book. What’s not cool though (for me anyways) is when my friend scored one of these for $25 off a craigslist ad in Boston a couple years ago. I did nab a Black Market Baby 7″ test press off the same ad though for $10, so all was not lost (read more about that later).

Note: the black vinyl copy I posted a week or two ago ended at $350. Naysayerz be damned (this means you “chris”).

Minor Threat Monday

Do you own the Minor Threat 7″ already? You probably should have at least one copy if you call yourself a record collector. straightray can hook you up with second coolest pressing of this straight edge classic. He describes some oily stains on the cover of the record which i feel like I’ve seen on a few copies before. Maybe the band was eating some Pizza Mart when putting together the records.

If you want to play it a littler safer with your wallet you can go after this blue cover copy that notorious German lostandfound_de has.

Subject to My America

Kind of a weird little 2-fer here courtesy of brodies… I’m not quite sure why he wouldn’t just sell them separately given the nature of the rest of his auctions (not to mention these records have absolutely nothing in common other than they are both hardcore bands), but maybe someone can sneak in the back door and get a deal on these. Lots are good for that kind of thing.

Late night lot for emo Monday

Though I wouldn’t really call this an “emo” lot, it’s got some in there, along with some screamo, and that just… I dunno… whatever you want to call that stuff Dischord was doing in the 90′s. Just call it music. Whatever. Also, some regular 90′s hardcore too… just check the pic! Another interesting listing from malaika279 with not too too much time left.  Get in on it, maybe you can scoop for just a buck a record?

Fugazi, Groundwork, Gyga, 90 Day Shake Ray Turbine, Born Against, Julia, Zeni Geva (Comic Book Book & Record set), The Metroschifter, Keleton DMD, Not for the Lack of trying, The Trans Megetti, Merel, Lync, WIG, Monster X, Aloha, Cyclops, Neanderthal, Sleepy Time Trio, Chino Horde, Armstrongs Secret Mine, Golden, ….and more!

Hardcore essentials

A couple of top shelf rippers courtesy of robase

I saw these in person at the WFMU fair last month and I have to say that while these records are second pressings, I would throw down on them without question (if I didn’t have them already), as both are CLEAN AS FUCK — especially the SOA.

Also it’s cool that NA always cited SOA as a major influence, so you can grab one of the best HC 7″s ever and the record behind the record in one fell swoop.

United Mutation Dischord/DSI

This 7 inch would make for a great soundtrack for a horror film. I can only imagine what the singer of this band looked like in the studio to make some of the demonish vox found on this record. United Mutation was a band from Fairfax, Virginia and originally put out this E.P. entitled “The Fugitive Family”and it was a split release between Dischord Records and DSI. The first press was out of 1000, with a later pressing out of 500 with an extra track.  Seller housatonic has got a pretty clean 1st press copy up for grabs.  Talking about this record and playing the mp3′s of this makes me wish I didn’t trade my copy away. Hopefully, I’ll be able to scoop one up down the line.

WAAAAAY Out Of Step

If you’re looking to start a collection of Out Of Step lps then 33eyez is your go to guy. You get your choice of the first three pressings from America and the German and UK pressings. All in really awesome looking shape. Unfortunately the 2nd pressing copy doesnt come with the super rare pre-order certificate which I’ve only seen one time. Got one? Let me know please.

That band Rollins was in before Black Flag

This one from trout2323 has about a day and a half left and is still at a respectable 1997 price. Not a bad deal for Dischord #2.
Its a bummer they never did an LP because I think this record is better than anything he did in his next band. For the record i also think Black Flags output pre-Rollins is better than the SOA 7″.

Minor Threat Out of Step test press V2.0

This just got relisted because the first time around estuary_sounds forgot the “I” in Minor Threat. It took him 5 days to notice and I was the high and only bidder. But now thats its relisted and noticeable I feel like i can post it since bidding will go through the roof.
This is a test pressing of the second press of the record and unlike the first pressing they didnt send these to radio stations for promo. Im not sure what the did with them really besides make awesome covers. I used to own two of these are one time but i sold one. The other was the first thing i ever bought on ebay around 1996-7 (outbid Jamie Doubledecker for $300). I dont think this will go as high as the one Jeff Nelson sold but it will def make some serious bank.

Faith / Void test press madness.

It looks like saturday-freedom is looking for a little more freedom in his life by popping this Dischord classic up with an almost $1200 BIN. The Faith / Void split a great record to argue over.

“The Faith side is better.”
“No way poser, the Void side kills it, you just like The Faith cause it’s Ian’s brother.”
“Whatever, you just like the Void side better cause you’re trying to be all mysterious and shit, go listen to your Youth Attack records dick.”

Fight over it. It doesn’t matter, both sides are awesome. $1200 for this? Yeah know, I can see it. Heavy hitters are going up in price, despite the shitty economy. Last one that shows up on Popsike went for almost $1100 and that was in 2008. We will see…

The listing quotes Jeff Nelson, saying there are 50 of these. Maybe I haven’t been paying attention, as I haven’t noticed a lot of these around.  He’s also accepting offers, so I say go for it!

what was your Senior Quote? What was on your mortar board?

I know that this is not an original Teen Idles 7″ and that its a pretty common record, but I love the cover art so much that I’m posting it anyway. I miss a lot of my old high school friends and this totally reminds me of those days. I remember feeling like it was so much stress to decide what to put on top of my graduation cap that a few days before when I still hadn’t decided I found a rubber ‘scrubbing bubble’ squeeky toy in the road. I figured that it was as good as anything else and I duct-taped it to the cop of the cap. My best friend at the time had the 18″ talking Pee-Wee Herman doll sitting on top of his cap. I dont know why, but I never thought to put some kind of reference to Straight Edge which I wish I would have.

Even though it wasnt Straight Edge, I do feel like I came through with my ‘senior quote’ in the year book. My quote was ‘You know.. you humans are not a bad lot really… as long as you know your place… and that place is on your knees digging your own grave with the bridge of your nose” – Oderus Urungus. I almost can’t believe that they printed that. I bet it wouldnt fly in a post-Colombine year book!

What do you think the records taped to the bottom of their gowns are? I wonder what they would be worth today!?

Flex Your test press

I could blah-blah-blah about this comp, or I could copy and past the excellent post that Kyle (deekymutombo) has already done. That saves me a lot of time to write about other records, since this is a CRAZY week on ebay.

Wanna know something cool that I’ve always noticed? Dischord and Revelation both released 6 killer 7″ singles before ever releasing anything on LP format – and in both cases, #7 was an LP compilation seeking to showcase all the cool bands from their hometown scene. I don’t think Revelation was just copying Dischord when they released “NYHC: The Way It Is” either. I think it just shows a cool natural progression of how a local scene rises up, a record label starts supporting what everyone is doing, and there’s almost a formula to the way it tends towork out. Anyway, Dischord’s first 12″ release was the Flex Your Head compilation that featured all the bands from the first few singles, in addition to all sorts of other local D.C. area bands like Red C, Iron Cross, etc. This compilation fucking rules, plain and simple. The first copy in the photo is obviously a test pressing. It comes with a photo-copied flier pasted on the dust sleeve that was also used on the back cover of the regular pressings. – via Seeking The Simple

TPT Is A SCREAM!

YES!!! After a morning of test presses that are really just limited pressings and UK test presses Josh isn’t psyched on, we FINALLY have some actual, legitimate, confirmed test presses for Test Press Thursday! Seller deekymutombo brings us these Scream and Youth Brigade test presses straight from the collection of Jeff Nelson himself. Definitely a pair of cool finds, and a pair of under rated gems at that. I would wager that more people think of the Cali Youth Brigade than the DC one, largely because of Another State Of Mind, and the song Sink With California. And Scream is just generally under appreciated. It’s really a shame knowing that if it wasn’t for Dave Grohl, even less people than already do would listen to Scream. Because everybody should listen to Scream. They were awesome.

(I apologize for the lack of a Youth Brigade pun in the title.)

Alternative Flex Your Head

Hey yo, I knew of it, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen one of these before. The Alternative Tentacles / Dischord pressing of Flex Your Head! Way cool. I guess around that time Jello and the DK’s were really into the DC sound, and they say the “In God We Trust” EP was influenced by it. I wouldn’t have guessed but it is the tightest/fastest DK record before “Bedtime For Democracy”.

chikira is “Dr. Vinyl Holland”, now that’s a store name!
