DYS Test Presses and Punk Rock Days

Oh sure, recordsrecords is selling a DYS test press. And sure, it’s Taang Records #34. But that’s not the mind blowing one here. What about this Dave Smalley kickstarter project?

Mind = Blown.

DYS is still going strong? Down By Law is still going strong? Why can’t Dag Nasty still be going strong? When did Dave Smalley become Walter? I want to hear what these songs sound like. You all better donate!

Test Press Thursday Is More Than Fashion.

I’m gonna guess that seller stone4124 is Antidote’s Drew Stone, which would explain the Gallery East show goodies that go with this test of Bridge 9′s live lp of DYS’s set at that gigger… not quite as cool as an original XClaim test press (has anyone ever seen one of those turn up? Ever?), but still pretty cool…

DYS Overload

There’s been a lot of DYS stuff on here lately and well, here’s more. Check it out, I think descendentsall is Bill Stevenson, and here he is selling what he believes to be an un-played og copy of ‘Brotherhood’ on XClaim! signed by his homie Dave Smalley. This is cooler than the test press The Taang store was selling for sure. There’s a lot more pics at the auction link and a question answered.

Now THAT’S What A DYS Test Press Auction Should Look Like.

Last Test Press Tuesday, we had up one of Taang’s lame duck test press auctions. You know the ones: picture free, high BIN, total waste of your time. Seller fate_just_missed though, he’s got one that was actually started reasonably, and even better, comes with a picture so you can see what you’re getting. Whether or not he paid Taang’s price to get it, I couldn’t say, but I can say that he’s selling a ton of stuff due to divorce, and having been through one myself, I know how much it sucks. So be sure to check out everything he’s got and bid if you can. There’s a lot of auctions, so I’m sure he’s got something for everyone in there somewhere.

DYS – “Wolfpack” TPT

The Taang! store is selling a test of DYS – “Wolfpack”, for a BIN of $300 /w free shipping. Now since it’s “Wolfpack” and on Taang!, don’t get it confused with “Brotherhood” on XClaim, but it’s still pretty cool, right? So cool, that they don’t even think they need to provide a picture for it or a decent description. Questions might need to be asked…

Fire And Ice.

The temperature outside isn’t getting any cooler, and neither is the heat that hardcorex74 is bringing. DYS “Brotherhood” on XClaim, puchased direct from Dave Smalley? Yes please. Too bad it’s already out of what my current bank account amount allows… things are pretty cool in there right now, if you know what I mean.

DYS Wolfpack test

Welp, this didn’t take too long… my buddy Mr. jrohara IM’d me the other night to ask what this was worth, and I told him to let ebay decide, and here it is.

I’m sure there are a decent amount of these out there as with most Taang related test presses, but short of offering me a lot of $MONEY$ for my copy, you’re probably not getting anywhere near an X-Claim! test any time soon, so this is the next best thing. Have fun.

Deathwish (hold the Tre)

Here’s the ultimate “lost” Boston hardcore record, courtesy of seller rock4light.

Deathwish recorded these three brutal shredders in late ’83, but for whatever reason the songs didn’t see the light of day until ’89 when future Matador Records guy Pat Amory pressed up this super limited (pseudo-bootleg?) 7″. I remember these being sold out of the back of Maximumrocknroll in the early 90s for $10 and thinking I should probably order one… unfortunately I never pulled the trigger and ended up paying through the nose for a copy years later. Lost & Found Records also pressed this up at some point, but this is the real McCoy that you should be spending your hard earned dollars on.

I’ve heard rumors of more songs from this session existing, but every time there’s talk of a new reissue, things never seem to come together. One of these days, hopefully. Guitarist Jordan Wood (RIP) went on to play in Slap Shot and bassist Bobby Frankenheim plays in the current incarnation of DYS.

Test Press Tuesday Can’t See Shit

Some things are inexcusable. Take the auctions from quesowueso for example. He’s pretty much doing everything wrong. It’s not 1997. You can’t get away with posting up X-Claim Records test pressings without pictures. And to have the balls to start off with those high start prices and not even bother writing up decent descriptions. It’s a recipe to not sell shit. Dumb.

Ganggreen Test Press.

DYS Wolfpack Test Press

Jerry’s Kids Kill Kill Kill Test Press

Slapshot Back On The Map Test Press

Slapshot Sudden Death Overtime Test Press

And then some of the other auctions have Taang pics… Don’t know. Seems REAL weird.

DYS via Underdog

Some nice auctions up courtesy of Russ from Underdog, aka onparole101.

Back in the late 80s/early 90s, my brother used to do a death metal zine and was always getting promos in the mail. Occasionally he’d give me a tape or two that he wasn’t into, and I’d trade them to my friend from high school’s older brother. In exchange, he’d let me take a record or two out of his old hardcore stuff, which he wasn’t all that into anymore. At some point he gave me his copy of Brotherhood, which at the time looked really cool, but I had no idea it was worth money. I didn’t find that out till at least 5 years later, luckily I didn’t trade it away or sell it in the interim. Strangely, this record NEVER turns up around Boston… I’m pretty sure it’s the X-Claim lp with the smallest number pressed (or maybe the worst distribution).

The much maligned second LP however, was a 99¢ staple at Newbury Comics for years, along with the 3rd SSD lp. It’s funny to see them for $20 in stores now on the odd occasion that they turn up.

Build Your Own X-Claim! Collection.

Seller vinylhighwaybrings us an almost complete collection of X-Claim! records for you to try and kick start your own collection with…

DYS is my favorite out of these (SSD’s The Kids Will Have Their Say would be on cover art alone, but that ones not to be found here), but any one of these is worth what you’re probably gonna pay. But I’m not telling you anything you don’t already know…

more than the X’s on their hands!

It seems as though DYS is back in action. When I saw them at the Gallery East Reunion Show a few months ago Dave Smalley said that it was a one time thing that they were playing, but aparantly that was not enough for the rest of the guys because they just played 2 more shows, one in Boston as part of the Mighty Mighty Bosstones 2010 Hometown Throwdown and one in NYC with Antidote.

When I was in NYC for the Sheer Terror show last month there was a HUGE video monitor behind the stage and during the opening bands sets they were playing rotating ads for other shows and I got to take a picture of Vinny Stigma with a huge DYS logo behind him which I thought was kind of funny.

Anway… I present to you an auction from unholybloodlust for the often laughed at SECOND DYS record featuring D. Christian Smalley on vocals!

bonus: on the Thorp Records message board we were talking about the first DYS show and Paul Bearer commented in to say “Ask him where his gecko is” and if you’ve ever seen the pictures on the back of this LP you know why that is hysterical!!

DYScography

Its no secret that I carry the banner of Boston Hardcore pretty hard. I love NY bands, Detroit bands, DC bands, Cali bands, Texas bands etc, but theres just something about the Boston sound that hooked me right from the start and being so close I got to see more of those bands and it just became MY hardcore. Its also no secret that Slapshot is my favorite band, but I also really love me some DYS!

Wolfpack was the first DYS record I ever had back in 9th or 10th grade and I loved the real hardcore songs like True Till Death and Wolfpack, but I also loved the funny stuff like the Iron Man cover and the Rub-a-Dub song.

Not long after Wolfpack my friend Liam got ahold of ‘the 2nd DYS record’ which seemed questionable just by looking at the band photos on the back. I mean, D. Christian Smalley with a lizard on this shoulder?!

These days if you have any interest at all in hearing the 2nd record you may as well track down a copy of the ‘Fire & Ice’ record. I remember when Taang! put this out because they did some merch that had a cool crossed arms/Xed up fists graphic on it. This is the Dutch version of the LP that Taang! licensed to Roadrunner in the early 90′s.

I actually didnt really find out about the Brotherhood record until I started collecting hardcore records. I don’t have a copy of it, but it is on my list of things that I hope to get in the future!

Last but not least here is a funny little bonus item. Jonathan Anastis had these printed up for the ‘Gallery East Reunion Show’ on August 14th of this year. I HOPE that Jonathan had them printed up because he thought it was funny, but its possible that he just took it a little to seriously. Theres also a lot of irony in the fact that its got Straight Edge imagery on both sides and to the best of my knowledge the 2010 version of DYS didnt have one straight edge guy in the band. Oh… how the mighty have fallen!

best offers on XClaim full catalog… almost!

I’m not sure if alohacb is an old Boston guy or just someone thats selling off pieces of a good record collection, but here is your chance to pick up ALMOST an entire XClaim Records discography! Theres no test presses here, we’re talking just standard releases, but speaking as a person that has none of these, I think its pretty impressive.

Some of the BIN prices are high, but all 5 of them have a ‘Best Offer’ option shoot him an offer on all 5 and maybe you can score a super deal! Then the only thing you will need to do is find XClaim #5 The F.U.’s ‘My America’ which would be my least favorite of the 6 releases anyway!

awesome item, bad description!

galleryeastproductions is a brand new user name with zero feedback, but it is an account set up to raise some money in conjunction with the Gallery East Reunion crew & XXX All Ages XXX movie. The money raised from this auction will go to Bridge Over Troubled Waters (www.bridgeotw.org) which is an organization that helps teens & young adults that are homeless or having other problems in the Boston area.

This first item they are selling is a bass that belonged to Jonathan Anastas from DYS. He did not use this bass for the Gallery East show, but it was used at the practices & rehersals leading up to the show. I’m sure some footage of him playing this bass will make its way into the movie.

In addition to it being Jonathans left handed Fender Jazz bass, it has also been signed by all the bands that performed at the Gallery East show. The auction description and title are horrendous!! I sent a question to ask exactly who signed the bass and got back this answer…

Revilers (Jared Souther, Andy Fletcher, Corey Hussey, Dave Reinhardt)

Refuse Resist (Shawn Refuse, Mike Barone, John Mehlman, Steve Risteen, Micheal Swiderick) + Springa

Slapshot (Jack ‘Choke’ Kelly, Chris Lauria, + 2) *+2 is John Bean & Craig Silverman

Antidote (Drew Stone, Niel ‘Zum’ Ostberg, Robert ‘Nunzio’ Ortiz, REA)

Gang Green (Chris Doherty, Walter Gustafson, Michael Earls, Matt Sandonato)

Jerry’s Kids (Bob Cenci, Rick Jones, Jack Clark, Ross Luongo)

The FU’s (Steve Grimes, Mick Stunt, Richie Rich, Wayne Maestri, Bob Furapples, John Sox)

DYS (Dave Smalley, Jonathan Anastas, Ross Luongo, Bobby Frankenheim, Jack Clark)
________________________________________________________

I think this is a pretty awesome item, but I wish they would have had it signed by the other ‘old Boston crew’ people that were at the show. People like Jamie Sciarappa, Katie ‘The Kleaning Lady’ Goldman, Dicky Barrett, Rev. Hank, Phil Phlash & some others too. Maybe if the winner is from New England they can try and track down the other people and have them sign it too!
