Ooh Crikey It’s… Lawnmower Deth

I’ve been straight edge my whole life and usually hung around with other kids that didnt really drink or anything either so we were pretty boring highschoolers. We used to hang out at rollerskating rink and not skate or go to the mall and just walk around for the most part.

I remember one trip to the mall I was with a friend that happened to have some money. It was 1990 and I was only in 10th grade so money wasnt really flowing like it is now a days… haha! Anyway, we went into the record store and were looking at stuff when a cassette by a band called Lawnmower Deth caught our eyes. For some reason it was an expensive cassette, I think it was $16 or $18 which may as well have been $1000 at the time. Well after a few hours of badgering him, my friend decided he would buy the tape.

I dont know what we expected when we put it in the tape player, but it was not what we heard. Lawnmower Deth FAR exceeded our expectations. Years later that tape was lost, but the memories of it were not and I eventually tracked it down on CD, but I’ve wanted it on vinyl for awhile and this is the first one I’ve seen. Unfortunantly its out of my current price range for a record like this.

I do implore you to check out ‘Ooh Crikey It’s… Lawnmower Deth’ if you havent heard it. I guess they’re a metal band and they are on Earache, but its not your standard Earache metal release, I promise you that! Plus look at how cool the guys names are!!!

Qualcast “Koffee Perkulator” Mutilator – vocals
Concorde Faceripper – guitar
Baron Kev Von Thresh Meister Silo Stench Chisel Marbels KP – guitar
Mightymo Destructimo – bass
Explodin’ Dr Jaggers Flymo – drums

SSS Sk8 + Destroy

soapandspikes has a test pressing of the ‘Sk8 + Destroy’ 7 inch from Englands crossover thrash heroes, SSS aka Short Sharp Shock.

I dont have this 7″, but I do have the 2007 self titled LP and I bought it mainly because I loved the LP cover which is all black with 3 giant S’s done in the KISS style.

I’m not sure how popular these guys are but this could be a great chance for someone to scoop up an Earache Record test press kinda cheap so watch it!

the Brutal Truth about Brutal Truth…

In 1991 or 92 I saw Nuclear Assault at a place called Derringers in Brockton, MA. 1 of my best friends, his sister, 1 of her friends and I all piled in to another friends 87 Ford station wagon and headed to the rock show. We always got to shows really early and this was no exception as we were the only ones in the club that were not playing the show.

I was standing with one of the girls when what I thought was some sort of alien or sasquach came lumbering out from the side of the stage. Wait! I thought to myself, thats no monster, thats Dan Lilker!

As he slowly wandered around the club the girl I was talking to caught his attention. I wish I had a picture of the 2 of them together because she was about 5′ 2″ and 14 years old and he was probably 6′ 5″ and almost 30 years old.

Anyway, our friendly conversation was cut short when I said “I got your new record and its really good”. I was talking about a the Brutal Truth ‘Birth of Ignorance’ 7″ I bought in Providence a few weeks prior. His expression immediatly changed and I could tell that I had upset the monster. He said “Brutal Truth? On vinyl?”, I nervously nodded my head as to say yes. I swear that in the moment he grew 10 feet taller, his face darkened becoming more skull like and his eyes started glowing red with fire as he proceded to tell me off for buying a bootleg before storming off.

I’ve never seen this version of this record before. I know it came out as a single CD, but aparently Earache decided to do something wacky and put it out as a 5 record box set that includes 5″, 6″, 7″, 8″ & 9″ records. Researching this post I read that it also came in a colored vinyl version, but I dont know that for sure. Either way, this is one of the coolest releases I’ve ever seen!

CLUTCH – 12″ Test Press

Clutch formed when I was in 10th grade… I can honestly say that back then I was completly unaware of them. As much as I like them now they are one of the bands that at first listen I just couldnt get into. It took some years and a slight bit of maturing for me to ‘get’ Clutch and really enjoy them. Two other bands that I didnt really get into until I got a bit older…. Tool and Motorhead (I feel like an ass for not immediatly loving Motorhead!)

This is a test press of Earache Records – Mosh 74T, ‘Passive restraints’ a 12″ ep from 1992. I don’t think I’ve seen very many Earache test presses, but this is already bid up pretty high considering it started at $9.99 and its not a full LP.

sometimes you just need more SLEEP!

Sleep may not have invented ‘stoner metal’ but they might have perfected it! Holy Mountain is definilty my favorite record of the genre.

1 – Here is a pretty awesome test press of the original Earache pressing. I made a best offer of $100, but it was declined. : (

2 – A sealed green vinyl copy from the Earache 2nd press. Limited to 1000 on green and 1000 on what they claim is 220 gram black vinyl.

3 – Last is a blue/red mix vinyl copy from the 2007 Kreation Records repress. Seller says this colver version is limited to only 250 copies.

the Holy Mountain…

There is no denying the power of SLEEP. If you havent heard them then Holy Mountain is a great place to start… if you have heard them and you’re not a fan then I’m sorry for you. Slow, dirgy, powerful, fuzzedout, Sabbath-esc stoner metal…. its just freeking awesome!

I dont know whats out there for original presses of this record, but this is a re-release colored vinyl (not sure what the color is) version limited to 1000 from Earache Records.

*I planned for there to be 2 links in this post. 1 to the colored vinyl re-release and 1 to a picture disc version that the seller claimed was limited to 250 copies. Unfortunantly the color vinyl was a BIN and it sold before I could finish posting this! Definitly a nice score for someone if it really is that limited!

Snikt!…. Snikt!… Bid Hard Bub!

I figured I would post this because of the announcement of a tour featuring Entombed & Merauder….

FYI:
5/31 Trenton, NJ @ Championship Bar and Grill
6/1 Toronto, ON @ Opera House w/ Obituary
6/2 New York, NY @ Gramercy Theatre w/ Woe Of Tyrants
6/3 Cleveland, OH @ Peabody’s w/ Woe Of Tyrants
6/4 Detroit, MI @ Blondies w/ Woe Of Tyrants
6/5 Chicago, IL @ Reggies w/ Woe Of Tyrants
6/6 Milwaukee, WI @ The Rave w/ Woe Of Tyrants

Wolverine Blues is one of my favorite metal records. I was into a lot of the early 90′s Earache Records stuff like Carcass, Bolt Thrower, Godflesh, Fudge Tunnel & Napalm Death, but Entombed was a little different. Just as heavy, but almost Wolverine Blues is actually a little bluesy! They sound like if Sepultura was from New Orleans insted of Brazil.

This is an import version of the LP put out by Rock Brigade Records in 1994 and then a really cool ‘Advance Promo’ cassette version of the Earache release. The cassette version is in a special package with artwork featuring Wolverine (Logan) and it includes a special Marvel comic. I don’t know if theres any connection between the story in the comic and the songs on the record, but it would be really cool if there was.
