Poison Idea – Pick Your King on Clear

Poison Idea – Pick Your King. One of the best hardcore punk 7″‘s to ever be released. I know that fellow poster Cooch can attest to that. No need to dive to deep into the tracks on this one, this release has been covered enough on this website. Taken from this blog about the “First Press” on clear. These were technically pressed second after the black vinyl copies due to a mix up at the pressing plant, but they were released to the public first. Seller 2wussy2‘s auction includes both inserts one was a sticker one was a lyric sheet. Check it out!

Pick your Pick Your King

It’s no secret that this is basically my favorite hardcore record ever. I think everyone should own a copy or six, and here are a couple to choose from:

Seller butchcass0 brings us THE version to own, for true ballers only. I’m sure I’ve posted this before a hundred times (too lazy to check) but Malcolm from Fatal Erection told me him and Pig bought a big bag of blow and stayed up all weekend putting these sleeves together. Better email that seller first though and see if there are any inserts.

And for you budget-minded buyers, ship.wreck over on the other side of the pond brings us a third press on blue wax. These were issued in 1985 by Pig himself without the help of Mr. Malcolm. Hopefully an American buyer will do us all a favor and bring this back home where it belongs. Please and thank you.

PICK YOUR KING

Another baller status platter that matters from record_lover, and pretty much the best hardcore record ever in my humble opinion. The price on these things has been freakin skyrocketing lately, and unfortunately this one doesn’t show any signs of going cheap.

Funny thing most people don’t know about this record is that the black vinyl was actually pressed first, but the clear was released to the public first (due to a pressing plant screw-up). So technically clear is the second press, but no one really cares because it’s definitely the cooler looking version.

LOCKJAW Dead Friends 7″++

A while back I posted the first Lockjaw ep, and here’s the second. Musically this sounds pretty much exactly like the first ep, and imo this one’s harder to find, so jump on this if you’re a fan. Skinhead hardcore at its finest!

Also from the same seller is the Drinking Is Great 7″ comp, with tracks by Poison Idea, Lockjaw, E-13 and Final Warning. Aside from Poison Idea, this comp is the only other material released on vinyl by these bands. I’ve posted records by all of those bands before, so if you’re unfamiliar, click the Fatal Erection tag below.

These and a bunch of other good records are being sold by my man Mitch SXE, Japanese tour promoter extraordinaire and the first guy I ever traded records with in Japan.

have you picked your king?

what better place to mail order a Poison Idea record from than Portland, Oregon!

Poison Idea “pick your king” EP on 1983 Fatal Erection records.
First pressing on CLEAR vinyl and comes with silkscreened sticker, both inserts (unmarked address insert!) and hand-assembled sleeve. Doesnt get much better than this!

RIP Pig Champion!

LOCKJAW – Shock Value 7″

First of two 7″s by Portland, OR’s “most hated band.” Musically, they were basically PDX’s answer to Agnostic Front—hard ‘n fast skinhead hardcore, often maligned over their potential politics (or lack there of). They had another 7″ after this one called Dead Friends, and a track on Fatal Erection’s Drinking Is Great 7″ comp. There’s also an unreleased LP, which was collected along with their vinyl output on CD by Grand Theft Audio.

500 made of this guy back in ’82 (when the Cowboys were strong), with rumors of copies being smashed by local stores who accused the band of being nazis. There are also 50 alternate sleeves with convicted serial killer Ted Bundy on the cover, but I think those were made after the fact. As mentioned in an earlier post here, I passed up this and their other ep once in ’97 or so for $10 each, in lieu of buying a 2nd press Turning Point 7″. I did end up getting both records at once a few years back, but the price was not nearly as nice.

E-13 – No Mercy For Swine 7″

By far the rarest release on Fatal Erection, here’s E-13′s debut 7″ from 1984. The tunes are not unlike the first Poison Idea 7″, but a little snottier and a little rougher around the edges. An overlooked piece of classic American hardcore for sure.

Only about 330 copies were ever pressed. The first batch of 300 with green labels came back defective and all but about 30 were discarded, and 300 more were pressed with white labels. All copies come with a stamped A-side label and hand drawn B-side label. The drawn labels are all pretty crude, as you can see from the picture below. My copy has a giant bloody vagina on it and I’ve seen another one with a swastika made out of dicks.

These don’t turn up much, so if you’re a Northwest punk head or a Poison Idea fanatic (like me) this is a rare opportunity to grab this elusive platter.

POISON IDEA Pick Your King 7″ clear wax

Yes, I post about this band a lot. This is my #1 favorite HC record ever (see #2 below.) Thirteen tracks of unbridled hate and self destruction squeezed into one squeeky clear 7″ platter. The band always said they were unhappy with the production on this one, but I couldn’t disagree more—sure the guitar is a little thin, but everything else is just so tight and punchy and works so well with Jerry A’s gut-splitting vocals. PURE HATE indeed.

First press of 1000 on clear wax, subsequent Fatal Erection presses were on black (700) and blue (1000.) The guy behind Fatal Erection once told me that he and Pig Champion bought a huge bag of coke and assembled all 1000 sleeves by hand over the course of one drug-fueled weekend. RIP Pig, you were one of the greats.

Final Warning 7″ on Fatal Erection

The first vinyl appearance by this Portland, OR band, on Tom Roberts’ (aka Pig Champion of Poison Idea fame) Fatal Erection label. I believe only 1000 were made of the original, back in 1984. These guys were notable for being one of the few American bands of the time playing inna heavy Discharge style—D-beat if you will. At any rate, a cool slab of early USHC that doesn’t always get the respect it deserves and can be had for a fair price.
