Grow old, walk into the forest, and die

One of the first stories I ever heard about Burzum was that their singer, Varg Vikernes, killed the singer of a rival band. One of the next stories I heard was his theory on old people. He thought old people should just walk out into the forest and die. That way they wouldn’t be a burden on the system or on younger people. Don’t you want to collect their records now?

What better record to start with than a black and blue etched double LP? This is an incredibly rare first press of the 1996 release on MISANTHROPY RECORDS.

NYHC Heaters.

Seller xuttermoshx brings more heat today, and appropriately enough for the currently 85 degree weather having NYC, these are all NYHC classics… yes I am aware that line would work better if we were in August and the mercury was hitting the triple digits, but after all those grey and rainy days last week, I think we can agree to let it slide.

Tigers Jaw Record Release December 17

Where are you going to be December 17, 2010? If it’s not the Democracy Center in Cambridge, Mass, I feel for you. This place will definitely sell out, and you’ll probably find a few people standing on the outside looking in. Quite a few. I’d suggest this crew grab their ipods and have a listening party in the Starbucks at the Garage. Or if you’re a Peets person, head over there. Maybe avoid the Newb though. Despite it being most appropriate, it will definitely be off the chain busy there. Spill off from the Two Worlds record release show and Christmas shoppers. Mostly Christmas shoppers though.

At this point, you’ve already missed out on the yellow vinyl version. You can either snag this one from shaunalynn83, or head over to Run For Cover Records to pick up the red and black versions. In fact, you should probably just do both.

Signed Victim In Pain On Ratcage.

I’ve mentioned a bunch of times now that, if you’re gonna go the autograph route with punk/hardcore bands, you should go big or go home. Well, I’d say unionpride69 has gone big, as he’s bringing us one of the original Ratcage Records pressings of Agnostic Front’s Victim In Pain lp, signed by Roger, Stigma, and Kabula.

He promises a pic of the actual front cover, but since the back clearly says Ratcage and has the “Important” label under it, you can rest soundly knowing that is the 2nd press of the infamous Nazi cover (the black cover version a lot of people think is the 2nd press is actually the 1986 repress on Combat Core). The fact that this remains unbid upon with 3 days to go is actually kind of astounding, even without the pic of the front cover; sure it’s got a high BIN, but there’s no reserve and the starting bid is completely reasonable. Hey, screw it, better luck for me…

None of that Youth Crew as a term for generic Straight Edge hardcore here, we’re talking the originators of the term. Obviously we see these often, but most of these are still unbid upon and all are still low priced, so you’ve got good odds of snagging at least one.

Why Am I The One To Blame?

When people mention NYHC, a few bands come to mind immediately. For me, I think The Cro-Mags, Bad Brains and of course, Agnostic Front. I’m sure Cooch would think about some KBD band that I have never heard of and Casali would probably just start talking about EPMD. Because that’s what Casali does.

AF IS New York Hardcore and Victim In Pain firmly cemented Agnostic Front as the face and voice of the “NYHC brand.” Blind Justice, Last Warning, Society Sucker, Your Mistake … classic riff after brutal mosh after great anthem. Every song is a winner. Great tracks. And very appropriate for the early 80s New York punk rock scene.

Now the cover on the other hand, has been deemed inappropriate by many. The original artwork features a mass grave at a Nazi Concentration Camp. Yes it’s extreme, yes it makes a point. 2 years after Rat Cage released the original record, Combat Core mixed it up and went with a plain black sleeve. 25 years later, Bridge9 Records would do something similar.

Below, you can see the progression over time. From the most sought after original release to the current B9 release. Whichever one you pick up, you can’t really go wrong.
