NYHC for Japan

The day the first earthquake hit in Japan a few weeks ago, I received two emails from the island: first was one from Jaybil asking me to pick up some Record Store Day records for him (with barely any mention of the earthquake) and one from my old trade pal Mitch SXE aka xxxevilxxx666, ordering some records from the label with a short “I’m ok!” postscript attached. Glad to see it’s business as usual for these fine gents.

Mitch has since started selling off some of his records to donate to disaster relief, so here’s a chance to score some cool vinyl and help out a good cause at the same time. Here are two great yet under appreciated LPs from the early days of NYHC, debut full lengthers by Kraut and the Nihilistics. Pretty much polar opposites in terms of sound — tuneful hooks vs. tuneless bashing, but I love ‘em both the same.

Reject Auctions.

Plenty of records available from chrisreject this week, and I have to say, for a boot, this is a nice looking United Blood 7 inch.

It’s only on closer inspection that you see how pixelated (maybe a better word for it is overexposed) that cover actually is. Other than that though, really nice looking, and that photocopied poster is pretty cool. Def a much nicer looking total package than the one we saw go for $200+ back in August. He also has some other nice stuff, like this Quicksand on white and an original Kraut 7 inch.

BATTALION OF SAINTS – Fighting Boys 12″

I like ranking things in lists, so here’s one of the three best 12″ ep’s that would fit on one side of a 7″, along with Black Flag Jealous Again and the Straight Ahead 12″.

These guys took the best elements of Motörhead (metal) and Discharge (d-beat) and combined it with a healthy dose of Southern California to make some rippin’ metal-tinged hardcore. Guitarist Chris Smith was a certified shredder, even lending some licks on one of the Kraut LPs, before his untimely demise (passed out in a bathtub, I believe.) Allegedly the band is cursed, as all original members aside from singer George Anthony are dead, but I saw these guys about 15 years ago and everyone from that lineup is still alive.

Also cool with this copy, aside from belonging to Chuck Dukowski, is that it has a press kit with it. I got one of these off ebay a couple years ago in a lot of random flyers, and it’s filled with KILLER material.

KRAUT – Unemployed 7″

Second single from NYC’s Kraut, and one of the earliest NYHC records (from 1981.) The B-side track “Matinee” is probably their first truly “hardcore” song and was comped on the first ever volume of Killed By Death, quite an achievement imo. Very few bands pulled off the perfect the mix of UK punk and US hardcore that Kraut did so well, I hold them right up there with DOA and Toxic Reasons as the best of that genre. Everyone knows Doug Holland from the Cro-Mags but I think some of his best guitar playing is on the early Kraut records. I saw these guys do a reunion show at CB’s once and they closed out their set with a great cover of “Bodies” (best Sex Pistols tune) and Mike Dijan from Breakdown did a front flip into the crowd and took out about 20 people at once.

I think there are a pretty healthy amount of these pressed (2000? 5000?) but they’re tough to find in nice shape so this is a nice keeper copy with a low starting bid. The seller is also a good friend of mine so do him a solid and check out his other listings.
