There was a period in the late 90s where it seemed all my friends were talking about this band called Modest Mouse. I’d never heard them. I’d never heard of them. I just wanted to listen to In My Eyes and Youth Of Today. And nothing about the band made me want to listen to them. They weren’t straight edge, they weren’t vegan. I actually couldn’t even figure out a hardcore connection. Plus, all my friends who seemed to be talking about them also met religiously every week to watch Dawsons Creek. Yeah … you could see why I wasn’t listening to their advice. Shortly thereafter, my friends would turn their backs on that band because “they had sold out.” That’s when I started hearing that altogether familiar phrase, “I liked them when they had a demo out.”
But these days, I’ve revisited Modest Mouse. It’s not hardcore. But it’s some enjoyable chill music. I can hang. So here’s my question. Was there EVER a hardcore connection? Either way, you may want to snag this EP from vinyl_never_rusts. Heart Cooks Brain / Shit Luck. The seller doesn’t have anything to say about the EP. Literally nothing. But you should know that this came out on Matador Records in 1999. Not bad.
