Child Abuse

A tasty little Mutha Records platter here from my top bro adversewind in TX.

For the unfamiliar, this is Russ from Underdog’s band before he was in Murphy’s Law before he was in Underdog. I can’t remember if he actually plays on the 7″ or not, as I don’t have the record right in front of me at the moment (but I’m leaning towards no). Pretty good “shore core” from 1983 if I do say so myself.

WFMU charity auctions

WFMU is a really cool independent radio station out of New Jersey. If you’re a NYHC fan you have probably some live sets of bands that were recorded there, and if you’re a record collector around the northeast you may have been to their record fair (which btw, is coming up in a couple weeks and I encourage anyone who can to attend, I’ll be selling a lot of cool shit along with a couple friends). Or if you’re a comedy fan, you probably know Tom Scharpling’s The Best Show on WFMU radio show. Anyways, it looks like they are runnining a bunch of charity auctions on ebay, and they have a bunch of cool records up in addition to other music swag. Check out the listings at wfmu_auction on ebay.

Here are a couple cool things they have up for sale…

First is another one for your Dangerhouse collction — the Randoms Let’s Get Rid Of New York single, the first release on the label. About 2000 pressed, and what they don’t mention in the listing that’s kind of cool is that it still has the original baggie, something they did with a lot of Dangerhouse releases to set them apart from the pack (the folded comic book-style bag with a little dot sealing it).

Next up is a copy of The Worst’s self-titled lp, straight outta the Jersey shore. I guess these Mutha label bands didn’t get much coverage back in the day, but thanks to the collecting world things have come around and all of the label’s early HC releases are pretty popular now (and pretty expensive). This lp is a great punk-turns-hardcore release, they really have some excellent playing chops on this one.

CHRONIC SICK – Cutest Band In Hardcore

My buddy Señor Suarez is unloading quite a doozy here, hopefully to buy little Baby Mordicus a new crib.

As with most releases on Mutha, no one really cared about this shit until it was deemed “cool” earlier this decade by the collector illuminati, and even “cooler” in recent years by snotty young HC kids with flipped up hats and irreverent attitudes. Either way, this record is pretty awesome — the musicianship is several cuts above your typical hardcore record of the time, almost like if Johnny Thunders joined a hardcore band.

Supposedly there were only 300 of these made, but they’ve been turning up quite frequently in recent years and rumors abound that Mark The Mutha is still sitting on copies.

…bring it.

The reference to Mutha Records has become almost passe in collector’s circles. For quite a while, these were some of the most desired early 80′s punk/hardcore records around, and for the most part they still are. But the saturation of interest has grown and now everyone with a patch on their jacket knows just who the cutest band in hardcore is. The ironic part is that the label and most of the bands on it were considered laughable at the time and many of the records went unsold (and remain that way. Jacko, holler at me.) While I dare anyone to check out the Fatal Rage LP and tell me that it’s laughable, I do agree that some of the Mutha material isn’t all that special.

One of the ep’s that stands apart, however, is the Child Abuse single. This Belmar band has some prehistoric roots to Underdog and was a large part of the punk scene of the early 80′s at the Jersey Shore. The seller of this particular copy has sold many like items and I’ve heard nothing but positive reviews, so bid with confidence. While many copies of this record with small paper “Think Again” (I believe the band changed their name to think again at some point) stickers, this copy apparently does not. Looks to be in incredible shape and the seller comments that it’s dead stock. With the surge of interest in Mutha releases this record has actually come down in price so I wouldn’t be surprised to see someone score this for somewhere around $50. A worthy price for a piece of NJHC history.
