Ah, Reason To Believe. I love this 7″. Originally released on Soulforce Records, this was then reissued by Nemesis Records on 6 different colors of vinyl… red, gold, blue, purple and green. Oh, and black… but that’s not a color. The green vinyl is the most rare version out there, and is numbered on the back corner out of only 50 copies. buggyscorner also sold one a couple of weeks ago for $72 or so. I’m not sure if this is the same copy that the buyer ended up flaking on, or whether the seller has a second copy. But whichever it is, you’re not going to see this one again in a hurry, so jump on it.

Take another One Step Ahead
So I posted the LP a while ago, and it’s been re-posted on the site since as well, but here is the 7″ which I think is actually a little better. It was also on Nemesis and came out after the LP, in 1991. Just two songs, but better production. Phillipe, the vocalist for the Chilean Remission confirmed that this is 7″ was where they got their name from (and a lot of their sound). Great melodic HC for for fans of the Unity LP and Verbal Assault. Awesome.
ffalk’s copy is sitting here, all blurry at $5 with no bids and 3 days to go.
FYI: there’s also some copies of this on discogs at around the same price.
One Step Ahead is the Nemesis of TPT
I gotta wonder what statement-of-pride has for expectations on this One Step Ahead LP test press. Nemesis is always kinda hit or miss. No one is out there backstabbing their friends to complete a Visual Discrimination collection. They released a bunch of cool stuff, but being the shadow of Rev, they never really seemed to catch on to the degree all that “classic” NYHC did. Truth be told, I prefer the One Step Ahead 7″ “Remission” to this LP, but it’s still a pretty solid slab of melodic, Verbal Assault influenced* Cali Hardcore.
*And by influenced, I mean it seems like they broke into Verbal Assault’s practice space, and picked up all their unused riffs off the floor. Regardless, still a fan.
One Step Ahead
At this point I forgot how I found this band, I think through some HC blog, I listened to their other record, a 7″ called “Remission” and I thought ‘oh wow, this sound a lot like Remission’, the Chilean band (who are great!), so I asked the singer of Remission on the React! (where’s my Praise+Rearranged pre-order?) board if they got their name form this EP and he said yeah and that they love this band. Well check it out. Early 1990′s California HC on Nemesis Records. This LP came out in 1990, before the “Remission” 7″. After downloading them I had to get these records and they are both great. If you like Remission, you gotta check this band out.
fiere has this for a BIN of $19 bucks. Not bad at all.
Billingsgate – No Apologies
Here’s one thing I never got about Billingsgate. How did they release their LP on Nemesis Records? Their first EP dropped in 1990 on Victory Records. It was VR002. Way, way back. They were both from Chicago, it makes sense. But the LP was released on a California label just a year later. What happened that they didn’t release the LP on Victory?? I’m sure Tony didn’t have ridiculous contracts 20 years ago, but it’s still hard to figure out. Anyone know?

Grab this one from xrevolutionaryx. Red vinyl, very nice. And if you are looking for MP3s, you can always check out our buddy Keith’s blog. Shout outs to Alert.
Insted murdere’d out
Bah bah bah bo! The first time I saw this version of the Insted 7″ was in Nathan and Anthony’s American Hardcore book. I think this version (3rd press) is cool because it’s kind of weird. For such a positive band like Insted, a stark cover like this doesn’t seem to fit. I mean did they run out of ideas? Were they like “well we changed the logo color for 2nd press already, and we don’t wanna use the same photo again so I guess lets just do this now”? Anyway, I’ve never actually seen this version in real life so check it out. Oh yeah and Insted was an awesome band and this is one of their best records.
deekymutombo owes us a burrito too.
Test Press Tuesday Cometh.
Seller destroy_records isn’t 100% positive if this is an actual test press of the Nemesis Records “The Icemen Cometh” live comp, but he’s guessing it is because of the big numbers on the labels. While the answer to that is “no it’s not”, I can’t pass up the chance to start Test Press Tuesday with an appropriately punny title, so we’re posting it as this weeks TPT kick off anyways. Just for the sake of my rep as worst person ever.
Stock Collection: Nemesis Records
Here’s another great lot that will pretty much fulfill your stock Nemesis Records collection. Not sure how many people actively seek out these records, but somehow, every collection seems to have them. I’m assuming record gnomes or trolls gather them for you. But fear not because these EPs are actually pretty dope. #4 Insted, #14 Once And For All, #7 Pitchfork, #19 Point Blank, #17 Fishwife. Fishwife? Who the fuck is Fishwife?? Yeah … But go ahead and grab this lot from per2112.
East Meets West
Hardcore 1990!
Check out this under appreciated gem from unholybloodlust. The East Meets West comp on Nemesis Records. Nemesis Records #4. Just a great little comp. I don’t think any of the tracks are comp exclusives (Wall Of Hate, Just Can’t Hate Enough, Injustice System … all on LPs by the bands), but bringing together all of these artists on one piece of wax is a crowning achievement. You could hand this to a young coremin for a starter course on the core. A little bit of everything for everyone. I wish they had got an Insted track instead of the Carry Nation, but heck, beggars can’t be choosers.
And with this auction, you get the clear vinyl AND a test press. Pretty cool. Of course, just like New Age Records, Nemesis Records didn’t seem to have any definitive pressing info for either of these records. Test press counts vary greatly. If anyone has any detailed info, let me know. I wonder if Big Frank knows?
Thanks to @javjavjav for pointing this one out to us.
Granted, the Simpsons AND Calvin & Hobbes may be pushing it on the cartoon front. How about some cartoon consistency?
we can stand, on our own two feet..
In New Jersey, people eat pork roll.
In New Jersey, people know why it’s called the Garden State.
(That’s because people in New Jersey know better than to spend their time on the turnpike)
And in New Jersey, people LOVE Vision.
I fall under the category of someone who loves Vision. I feel lucky to have gotten to see them in the late 90′s during an absolute resurgence where going to a Vision show in NJ meant a packed house, dives, singalongs and of course some moshing. The two 7″s that precede this, their debut lp, are both worth owning but not classic. Their unfortunate 2nd LP did the prerequisite heel turn towards metal, and then subsequent releases veered back to their sound, which I always considered a hybrid of Bad Religion-esque melodies and the edge of NYHC which these guys grew up around. This LP cemented Vision as one of, if not the, frontrunner of the late 80′s hardcore scene. Well, in New Jersey.
Though later repressed on Tacklebox, what we have here is an original pressing on Nemesis Records, one of my favorite “somewhat mysterious” hardcore labels. Much like their older brother label Wishingwell – also from Orange County, CA – Nemesis pressed a range of variant colors with very little as far as actual documentation on “how many were pressed.” It’s safe to say there’s 500 or less of these on purple vinyl, though perhaps one of the elder statesmen of New Jersey have a better memory or information and can give a number on this. If my memory serves me correctly there is also a pink vinyl version of this, and some make a distinction between the “light” and “dark” purple.
One of the things I always appreciated about this LP was just how perfect the cover image is – shot at the infamous Scott Hall show which featured (outside of Vision) Bold, Life’s Blood and Enuf. As legend goes this was the first show where the 24 x 36 “The Way It Is” and Bold “Speak Out” posters were available. Maybe just as cool, Rob Fish attended the show with a garbage bag full of Release shirts.
At one point in my teen years I would have probably sacrificed all of my worldly possessions to be at this show. Now, I wouldn’t even have to think about it before stepping into the time machine.
If this record manages to stay under $30 I might have to get into the bidding. And just so the world doesn’t tilt off it’s axis, have it shipped and safely stored at my mother’s home on the Jersey Shore. It just feels like the right thing to do.
