Trial S/T ten inch

Madison, WI’s Earwax Records has the Trial 10″ here, this I haven’t seen in a while. I have this record, but I don’t remember, I think this is the first Trial release, right? This was on Jawk Records. Outside of the ugly 1990′s cover, (wtf is that flaming hand?!) this is a great record and as good as anything Trial’s released since then. Also, unlike some people I actually like 10″s, they are cute.

The Gloves

So continuing to pigpile on boy yeggin for one more post. When I first heard about this I was pretty psyched and pre-ordered a copy. I guess I was again, in the minority since it appears he (yeggin is Dave Excursion as it was pointed out earlier) still has some of these. Oh well. Maybe people just didn’t get behind the theme of this? How can a tag line like this not hook?

The Challenge” is the first 7″ in a series from Les Gants depicting the trials, tribulations, and moral musings of a 18th century french duelist caught between the desire to kill and the fear that it is perhaps rude.

I like history and all things olde and swashbuckling so for me this was great, and instead of some clown-shoe shit like a lot of “fun” bands do, this is the kind of humor in hardcore that I can dig. Well, $4, and you will get some raw as fuck HC with cool lyrics. Try it out. Read the auction description for members-of and the rest of the blurb. The original insert had lyrics printed way too small though, and people who pre-ordered got a bigger print-out in the mail. Not sure if this is included here, but Dave can probably hook you up.

Kill, this pain….

No, I’m not referring to over-eating at Thanksgiving, but I do hope everyone had a good holiday! I’m talking about this Undertow 7″ on Indecision. This was my first Undertow record, it was the record that got me into the band and it continues to still be my favorite Undertow record. Even though this is not a “real” record in the sense that it’s a collection of comp tracks, I think it happens to be some of their best songs musically as well as lyrically (esp. ‘Kill’ and ‘Everything’) and they come together really well on this EP. “Kill” is monumental, the Embrace cover sounds really natural, and fits it really well lyrically too, “Everything” and “Never” are great songs, can’t lose here! I forget where each song is from, but ‘Building’ is from “Words To Live By”, the Embrace covers LP, which  was Trustkill Record’s first release (co-released with Watermark).

This version is the orange out of 345 and is the only colored variant, yeggin is offering a decent BIN with a bidding option.

Why not add this poster flag that xxravenjadexx is selling.

Stock Collection – Brotherhood LP

I think this particular color wax copy of this record would qualify as “sexy”. That is one dope looking slab of wax. statement-of-pride may be a little dyslexic though as he typed out the pressing info twice as being out of 25 but its out of 52 according to Crucial Responses web page.
I think there is a eenough of these though to be able to pick one up on black wax. Youll be glad you did. It always looks dope in anyones collection and dont lie cause if you own this you know you probably spent way too much time over the years just staring at that cover photo!

1st press: 807 black vinyl, 273 green vinyl (a few are on solid green vinyl*). Comes with live photo insert. The back edge of the sleeve is white.
2nd press: 1569 black vinyl, 375 pink vinyl, 52 swirled vinyl. Comes with a Brotherhood Seattle Hardcore insert. The back edge of the sleeve is black.

Open Your Eyes

statement-of-pride has a good batch of late 80s/early 90s zines up, mostly of the sxe variety. Open Your Eyes was one of the best of the time period — cool bands, good graphics/layouts, lots of content etc etc. They cranked out three issues and a couple of really cool cassette comps during their brief existence, all of which are very much worth owning. I know they were in Seattle, and I want to say there was a Botherhood connection, but I don’t remember off the top of my head. Contents are pretty self explanatory from the covers, have at ‘em.

BUTT TRUMPET!

I had a girlfriend that was really into Butt Trumpet (the band) around the time Primitive Enema came out… was that their only record? I liked them too and I think we actually saw them live, but I cant remember where or with who. I wanna guess it was with Gwar at Lupos, but I might be totally making that up.

Anyway, they had some funny songs and at the very least that 1 LP is decent. This is a 7″ for a song from that record called “I left my flannel in Seattle”. Its not a bad song, but the best part about this record is that the lay out looks like a Sub Pop single.

pfoasafehaven has a few other records for sale, but nothing that seems to fit in with this Butt Trumpet 7″ at all. He does have a Space Needle pen for sale so maybe he was just a big fan of Seattle!

Mates Of State

I was introduced to Mates Of State a few years back. I’m pretty sure it was by Pandora. I had been surfing for Matt & Kim like artists when I wound up on Mates Of State. Now this band is NOT hardcore whatsoever so don’t get it confused.

However, they are a shining example of great indie rock. I love that female fronted indie rock sound. Not too laid back and not over the top with energy. Just a good drive with a few haunting tones. Plus the indie label that does all their tunes, Barsuck Records out of Seattle, WA has turned me on to a TON of other great sounding artists. Rilo Kiley, Harvey Danger, Menomena, Chris Walla (solo stuff), Say Hi … And you can find some of those bigger acts on this label too. Everything from Nada Surf to Death Cab For Cutie to They Might Be Giants.

I suggest looking into this band AND supporting this indie label. Good stuff going on here. Feel free to pick up this out of print color vinyl while you are at it.

Stay Gold

Stay Gold was a smooth hardcore band from Northwest US, mostly Seattle. They began when hardcore was in a full revival swing, 98 or 99. These were the years of Floorpunch, Reach The Sky, In My Eyes, Kid Dynamite, Saves The Day … Hardcore was back and was really taking names.

They released a few albums on smaller labels (like Aram’s Anchor Records, pre React Records!). And ended up signing to Indecision Records to sell a few EPs and LPs. They did some big tours, but at least on the east coast, they never got the fanfare they deserved. Oh sure, the Tanguays moshed like crazy bastards (or at least Kyle did), but for the most part, it felt like they slipped unnoticed through the east coast. I’m sure it was an all together different story in Seattle and Portland.

Also, lets not forget that one of the dudes in the band is named Eagle Barber. Great name. And a pretty chill dude too. He hooked me up with a big box of tees a while back for a VERY reasonable price. Big fan.

First up, their first release on Anchor Records. Later Anchor Records would release EPs from What Feeds The Fire and almost Verse. Then Aram got super busy touring the world 600 times over with Champion and had to put record labels on the back burner for a bit. But this Stay Gold EP is a fave. This is the regular release.

This is the same EP but with the limited edition record release cover. Limited to 75. Aram is obviously good with packaging, always has been. This one comes with an acetate sleeve AND a vellum sleeve. Clear vinyl too!

Up next is the Caught Up In The Moment EP from Indecision Records. This one dropped in 2001 and was really when Stay Gold seemed to shine. This was the record that kids really wanted. Sadly, most of those kids wanted the record in 2006, instead of when it originally dropped in 2001. Like Van Gogh, they seemed to have got more popular post break up.

If you never got down with Stay Gold, I suggest picking these up. They are worth the listen. Continue reading »
