I keep hearing from people (mostly girls actually!) that Shelter was the band that got them into hardcore, punk, straight edge, vegetarianism, was their gateway band that changed their lives, etc. I’ve never heard Shelter in high school (the punk rock formative years) and when I finally did they were always the post-Youth Of Today band for me and not much else. I don’t think Shelter will ever top or even equal YOT on any level in my mind and I think that’s healthy. That said I don’t hate Shelter, and I’m open to hearing some more of their better records, but I’m not exactly hunting for them. The early stuff is the best it seems, the later pop-punk stuff blows. Here’s something from the earlier catalog, on EVR, at $10 with free shipping, I think this is the first two 7″s on a 12″. Did this also come out on Revelation on CD? Shelter’s still hazy for me I guess.

This should be Revelation number 1
…because it’s the best record they ever did! Justin from Indecision sure gives us a true banger here. The almighty Ray and Porcell 7″ on purple vinyl. I had to retouch the photo a little, since it was so dark you couldn’t make out it’s sweet rich tones. There are only 1000 of this on purple, which is crazy, there should be a million, because this is so good!!! I mean, think about it… This record never let you down. There were those really sad Youth Of Today reunions, and have you heard the last… I dunno… five Shelter records? But this record has never done anything to soil it’s reputation. For real, it’s 1990 or whatever year this came out, and you’re Ray and Porcell. You think you need a fucking drummer to slow you down? Hell no.
I literally quoted “Broken Glass” to a friend last night. Awesome song.
Shelter No Compromise blue
When it comes to Thanksgiving, I suggest No Compromise on your meal. Sweet potatoes, apple pie, green beans, some ill rolls and some tofurkey if you feel so inclined. Just think, what would Ray do? Oh, and grab this EP from dissent12047. Good look.
Cappo on color
Ever wanted to take a journey through the early musical career of Ray Cappo in brilliant technicolor vinyl?
orangerory can help you out right now! Starting with the Rev repress of Can’t Close My Eyes on green.
Next is the “final” press of Break Down The Walls. I guess it wasnt so final. But it is on white vinyl.
And heres the 90s repress of WNITA on maroon which im pretty sure Rev tried to secretly press more of on colored vinyl and not tell anyone.
Up next is Rays buddy flick, the Ray and Porcell 7″. This was always a laughing stock (much like Old Smoke) when I was growing up but somehow now its cool. Ok sure why not.
And finally the record which made Krishnacore less sketchy, Shelters breakthrough debut Perfection Of Desire on maroon.

Youth Of Today WNITA acetates
I got alerted to this one this morning by my dude Geert. I think the seller, vitaminhedgehog, is the same guy in Japan who was selling the early Rev tests and other rare shit a while back. And when it comes to rare this is about as rare as it can get. A set of acetates for We’re Not In This Alone. There is probably only 1 of these in existence despite the sellers claim of maybe 5-10. Nobody makes 5-10 acetates. Usually one is made to check the sound and then its off to the test pressing stage.
The kicker here is the seller saying it has a previously unheard mix of the record on it. I would be really interested to hear that. The price isnt cheap by any means but with what people pay for a Break Down The Walls test these days its not that far off from going rate for a one-off rarity.
Alone On His Birthday
I want to shout out my buddy Sean. Today is his birthday. Happy birthday, dude. You may actually know Sean. I first met him last year. But for years, he would be on the other end of packages of cds and demos. He was always shipping me something to review for HYE. I appreciated it. We’d go back and forth a bit over email so it was nice to meet him last year. Not only was he doing PR, but he also runs a pretty successful record label, Blood And Ink Records. Since that first meeting, I’ve run into him a few times at fest. I got a chance to hang out with him some more this year than prior fests. Always a good time shooting the shit.
In fact, during some shit shooting, he dropped a bomb on all of us. He claimed the first 5 songs INCLUDING** the ska song, were his favorite Shelter songs ever. How is that possible? If that’s true, I have some other records that might be up his alley.
And of course
And this one is for Sean. I know he won’t be alone on his birthday, but it’s his favorite*** song.
** Just kidding, he said EXCLUDING

Big Lots BIN 2
Another BIN lot from melissajason2010 but this one has a heavy focus on Ray Cappo. Perfect for budding stalkers. Kinda high for a BIN on these. Who ever said stalking was gonna be cheap?!

Shelter and Live YOT Test Presses.
By sheer happenstance, I accidentally scooped Cooch on these Ray Cappo oriented test presses for sale from incorrectthoughts, aka Double Decker Records. Sadly, while the Shelter test is for a legit Shelter record, the YOT test is for a live bootleg. Kind of a shame, as I’m sure a test of CCME or WNITA would have drawn beaucoup attention. But I do have to say, it’s got a pretty cool looking sleeve, especially for something that’s image free.
Happy Valentine’s Day?
Seller sreich666′s auctions have managed to stay pretty much off our radar until now; these three all end in less than a day, and are still less than or around 5 bucks. Weird thing is tho, in each of these auctions, he makes sure to mention that they’d make a “great Valentine’s Day gift”, and Valentine’s Day, as we all know, was three days ago. Methinks SOMEONE is single…
Me, You, Youth Crew.
I’m posting these Shelter records being sold by iheartprunes not so much because I’m a giant Shelter fan (I like Mantra, and while Jeremiah from Proclamation and I used to listen to some of their Equal Vision releases in his car, that’s about all I ever bothered to get into), but because Tony Pops of Radio Silence (a book) and In My Eyes (a band) fame put up this cool little video, apparently as a precursor to his next book project, and I felt you should peep it.
Why do I use Shelter records for this plug and not YOT as the title suggests? Because the part about seeing Shelter is especially choice. Check it out for yourself:

lots of vinyl, but no beads!
When I checked out xsmikex’s other auctions I was surprised I didnt find some Krishna beads, but maybe he was just a Shelter fan and not a devotee. What he has is more Shelter 7″s than I have ever seen and probably more than anyone should have.
One of the oddest shows I saw back in the day was Dropdead opening for Shelter. I cant remember the club, but it was on the second floor of a building in downtown Providence. I think it was Dropdead, Onion & Shelter and it was a weird mix of people!!
lots of Posi Tapes!
loop88 has a couple of tape lots that are ending TODAY around 3:00pm est!
Lot #1 gets you both Start Today and the Gorilla Biscuits ep as well as Speak Out & Looking Back by Bold!

Lot # 2 is a Ray Cappo bonanza! Can’t Close my Eyes, Both versions of Break Down The Walls, Were Not In this alone, Disengage, the Ray & Porcell 2 song tape, Shelter’s 1st 6 song Tape & the Krishna chanting cassette

Krishna Core 101
Lots of zines and some records coming out of East Haddam, CT.
If you act fast you can pick up the 1990 debut 7″ and the later 1990 follow up LP from Raghunath and the boys. I remember seeing Shelter a few times at Club Baby Head and the best part was there was always free food at the merch table! I still have my copy of ‘In Defense of Reality’ and some beads at home where too, but I never had a śikhā.
best youth crew kick ever?
artyarty19 must have cleaned out the catch-all ‘junk’ drawer at his house becuase he is selling a bluetooth headset, an empty glass coke bottle, some random golf balls, a graphic calculator, a deck of Joe Camel playing cards and this Youth of Today 7″….. weird!
My best memory of this record isnt actually of the record itself, its just of the cover image. I was with 2 friends at a Bosstones show at the W.A.G. in Worcester, MA and we were there HOURS early just hanging out. Joe Sirios the drummer for the Bosstones asked us to give him a ride to a liqure store. So the 4 of us hopped in my dads 1967 Badacuda and drove up the street. Joe bought us all soda and gave us pieces of ‘Black Jack’ chewing gum from the pack he just bought. When we got back to W.A.G. Joe let us follow him in to watch set up and hang out. Dickey was standing around and he was wearing the Youth of Today shirt with that image of Ray from this record on it. One of my friends was rocking the Krishna haircut at the time (it was 1991 I think) and the first couple of Shelter records had already come out. When Dickey say the Krishna cut he pulled off the YOT shirt and handed it to my friend and said “enjoy”.
Side Note: Totally unrelated to the event at W.A.G. the kid that Dickey gave the YOT shirt to ended up having his picture used as part of the back cover artwork for the rerelease of ‘More Noise & Other Disturbances’.
No Compromise!
Shelter 7″ with what seems like a pretty high BIN to me. A store near my house just got one of these and priced it at $19.99 so make a $20 offer on this one and maybe you can pick it up.
I love the live photo on the cover of ‘In Defense Of Humanity’ but this record is great too.
