I first got in to Green Day through a friend that I was in a band with around 9th grade. I remember hearing all the sappy love songs he would play and not totally understanding how this was ‘punk’ when I was listening to bands like Black Flag & the Sex Pistols. Green Day were not very far off from the Ramones though and there was no denying how catchy some of the songs were. When I first got the 1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours CD I had no clue what the title meant and I’ve never had any of the original singles but that early stuff has always been my favorite Green Day and actually the only Green Day I like with the exception of some stuff on Dookie.
There have been a lot of old Green Day singles poping up lately so it will be interesting to see what these bring in for incorrectthoughts.
Black vinyl – Lookout records paper sleeve

Red vinyl – 4th press on Skene records

Funny side story – the same friend that first got me into Green Day saw them play some really early East Coast shows. I think one was at a grange hall and one was a basement show. So being the ‘punk’ he was, he got upset when Green Day was getting famous. He went to see them at Club Baby Head in Providence right as Dookie was starting to hit big and he heckled Billy-Joe the entire set and Billy spit in his face. After the show he went outside and wrote SELL OUTS in huge letters on the back of their tour bus. It meant very little then and means even less now, but its a good story to tell!
