Power Violence you can actually listen to…

Here’s a little piece of power violence history you can own as thisisourstruggle is offering up Slap A Ham Records #1.5, the Infest / Pissed Happy Children split.

True, it isn’t the original Slap A Ham #1 blue 8″ flexi disc, but this one you can put on your turntable without fear of destroying the record or breaking your stylus! Win/win!

Dude could have helped himself out a bit with that picture though. A staedy hand or using focus always helps and he needs to get out of his own way with the shadows, but really, all you need to know is that it isn’t the flexi.

This one you can actually listen to.

8 inches of ‘core

My pal adversewind has been freeing up some tasty platters from his collection for the past few months, and just posted up a great batch of stuff on Monday. Be sure to check ‘em out, there’s a little something for everyone. Here are a couple top entries into the very small list known as “classic split 8″ records”…

First off, the Dropdead/Rupture split 8″ is one of the coolest looking records, and I was absolutely elated to walk into my friend’s record store in the mid 90′s to find this thing for $6.99 as it was a completely IMPOSSIBLE record to get at the time (regardless of vinyl color). This is some of the best Dropdead material, and the Rupture side smokes too. It’s too bad Alberti Record Pressing went out of business, as no one makes a good looking splatter record anymore.

The Infest/PHC split has everything bad going for it — split record, 8″ record, flexi disc, live recordings — but it’s still a scorcher and it’s release #1 for Slap-A-Ham which adds to the charm. I still need a copy of this record if anyone wants to send me one for free ;)

Fighting Music

One of the holy grails of power violence, courtesy of god_among_men_77 and ending Sunday night. Only 300 of these were made, and based on Chris Dodge’s recent ebay activities with Slap-A-Ham dead stock, I wonder how many of these even made it out into the wild? One of these years Deep Six will reissue this record, but until then get ready to fork over the buxxx on ebay.

Ham Slappin’ Hits

Slap-A-Ham Records head honcho Chris Dodge, aka ponty, has been selling off these “extra” copies of his releases for the better part of 10 years now, it makes you wonder if he ever even distributed them in the first place.

Anyways, the Crossed Out/Man Is the Bastard split 7″ is pretty much the pinnacle of powerviolence as far as I’m concerned, and the rest of these ain’t too shabby either. Blank label guy down there at the bottom is a test press of the Despise You/Suppression split.

MELVINS.

When I was in high school, I was friends with an older kid who would have loved these two records that unfoldtheinside has up for auction…

Dude seriously LOVED the Melvins, like to the point that he had a button of that Misfits Fiend Club knock off they did, and wore it every single day. This is the same dude once bought a GIANT Burn sticker at Newbury Comics out from under me, because he said I wasn’t old enough to appreciate how good they were yet. And you know what? He was right.

West Coast Power Violence

Slap-A-Ham head honcho Chris Dodge is digging into the vaults again, which makes you wonder how much of this stuff he actually sold in the first place ;) . No wonder these records were always so hard to get.

1. Crossed Out discography lp on white – some people say they are the #1 PV band of all time, I may be inclined to agree on certain days, but on other days I prefer No Comment. This LP collects all of their vinyl output (first 7″, split w/ Man Is The Bastard, split w/ Drop Dead) and some other odds n sods. I believe only 300 came on white, I’m still kicking myself for not buying a $15 sealed copy at Vinyl Solution in CA back in 2002.

2. Couple o’ Capitalist Casualties 7″s – Raised Ignorant and Dope & War. These are their 2nd and 3rd singles, respectively. I was listening to the split LP with MITB the other day (scored for $7 a couple months ago, so ILL) and was thinking how fucking shredding this band is and how much they are unfairly overshadowed by their peers (Crossed Out, Infest, MITB, etc). I wasn’t too into the later stuff with Max from Spazz on drums, but everything they released up to that point is top shelf PV material.

NO COMMENT Downsided 7″

To go along with the Infest ep’s I posted below, here’s another of the best HC 7″s of the ’90s. This is No Comment’s second release from 1992, and the absolute pinnacle of their (few) releases. 11 songs that blaze by in just a few minutes, but instead of the typical powerviolence formula of cookie monster vocals and stompy mosh parts, they just took early ’80s American hardcore and turned the speed up to 11.

Approx. 1500 made on clear, I believe this is actually the 2nd press (whereas the first is black). If anyone’s holding a blue or pink copy, hit me up.

CROSSED OUT 7″ original

First off, this seller has a GREAT user name. Diehard metalheads do NOT fuck around.

Another best-in-genre release here, Crossed Out’s debut 7″ on Slap-A-Ham from 1991. One of the original “power violence” bands—as christened by Man Is The Bastard—these guys originally set out to form a band that sounded like “Siege meets the Shitlickers,” which is a pretty good summation of CO’s sound when you think of the Shitlickers’ lack of fidelity coupled with Siege’s extreme speed. A friend of mine hung out with these guys back in the day and said all they wanted to do was smoke weed and play Sega Genesis, aka living the good life.

1000 made of the original press, all on black vinyl with really big dead vinyl gaps between each song. Six test presses exist on solid purple vinyl, 2–3 of which have come up on ebay in the past few years (and one of which I now own.) Nice opening price on this copy, but who knows where it’s going to end.

Funny side note: check out what singer Dallas VanKempen is up to these days
