TPT: Draw Blood – The Calm Before The Storm

On April 20th, instead of blazing up, I visited a red cross blood donation center. I gave a pint. That’s a good way to spend my time. Consider doing the same. The dude who took my blood (the phlebotomist) had some weirdo tattoos, and definitely could have been my kid brother (who is also a phlebotomist). That’s right, you see where this is going right? Now we’ll talk about Draw Blood. Actually, I know fuck all about this band. No idea who they are, despite the fact that they are from Boston, Mass. How have I never seen this band? screaminggetsyounothing must be connected as he seems to have a whole set of this band’s albums up on ebay. This test press is pretty rad though. That b-side etching is awesome.

TPT: The Mongoloids and Finger Painting

I’m sure there is a story behind this cover. If I had to guess, I would point at Dave and Caitlin over at Six Feet Under Records. Maybe Dorie? I mean, I guess Greg Mongo could have made all these covers himself, but it’s unlikely. He’s an artist, but not an artist, you know? There are 11 hand painted covers for The Mongoloids Assorted Music LP. handsomephantomrecords doesn’t say which number this is, but I’m sure if you fired off a question, he’d answer.

Verbal Assault – Learn test press

Here’s a belated test press Tuesday entry from solutionrecordsx. As with anything distributed by Giant Records, these were most likely sent out as promos as there seems to be a lot of these floating around. I had one many years ago that I bought along with the first two Anti-Heros LPs for $50, that ended up being shipped off to Japan in trade for some Far East rippers.

Musically this is probably the most “generic” sounding VA release, but it’s a pretty good slice of Minor Threat/7 Seconds worship that still gets the occasional spin (though not nearly as much as the masterpiece known as Trial). I’m always surprised none of the VA records have been reissued, especially this LP which isn’t nearly as common as their later releases. I heard Rev was going to do something with this stuff, anyone have any ideas?

Flex Your Head

Looks like Jeff Nelson has decided to open the floodgates again, I wonder when his stash will run out?

The dead stock Flex Your Head test press is very cool, though not as cool as the test my friend owns that is signed by ever member of every band. And honestly, I’m actually more interested in the stock copy first press, as these things are next to impossible to get without ringwear on the cover. Right up there with the wheat field cover and FU’s My America in the always-has-ringwear department.

Jeff Nelson is back…

… and he’s bringing some serious heat with his usual selection of top shelf items.
I will let Jeff do all the talking:

“Test Pressing of the FIRST pressing of “Out of Step”, which used a completely different mix than the second pressing. The most obvious difference is the end of the final, hidden track, “Cashing In.” On the first pressing, the song ends when the band stops playing – whereas the on the second pressing there are violins at the end of the song. The even pricier “Out of Step” test pressings with the big black sheep silkscreened on the front of the white jacket are from the SECOND pressing. The test pressing for sale here is of the FIRST pressing.”

“This is a very rare test pressing of the DC Hardcore compilation LP, “Flex Your Head”, in mint condition. Dischord Records, (Dischord No. 7), Washington, DC, 1982. “Flex Your Head” was Dischord Records’ first LP, after having put out six 7″ EPs the previous year. The bands on this sampler included The Teen Idles, Untouchables, State of Alert (S.O.A.), Minor Threat, Government Issue, Youth Brigade, Red C, Void, Iron Cross, Artificial Peace, and Deadline. This test pressing was intended for radio stations and fanzines, but was never sent out. Record is in its original paper inner sleeve (which has definitely yellowed with age), with 8 1/2″ x 11″ xerox glued to the paper inner sleeve. Xerox is original, from 1982, and is copy of right half of back cover art for “Flex Your Head”, showing track listing. Record itself has Nashville Record Productions label on one side, with handwritten in-house catalog number. The other side has a strange label that is mostly blank, but which has a fainst offset from some other record’s label, so partially legible type is all reversed).”

“This is a rare, absolutely mint-condition test pressing of the first LP from Scream, “Still Screaming”. Dischord Records No. 9, Washington, DC, January 1983. There are 20 songs on this record, and it is truly one of the best early hardcore/ska/punk/rock albums ever recorded. In 1983 I wrote “SCREAM” on both sides of the paper sleeve. Only 100 of these test pressings were made, and most were sent to radio stations, fanzines, or given to band members, so it is very rare. This test pressing was never sent out, and has never been played, ever, poor thing.”

TPThurs – Blank Blackout Vacant

Seller wakusei brings us a UK test press of one of the more underrated Poison Idea LPs, 1992′s Blank, Blackout, Vacant. This one starts off with one of my favorite PI tracks, Say Goodbye, which imo is the basic blueprint for pretty much every early Fucked Up track. If you’re a true PI superfan like myself, check out the live version of Say Goodbye on the Religion & Politics Part 1 & 2 10″, it’s a rager.

I think these Vinyl Solution tests were made in pretty large amounts and sent out as promo, but they still aren’t all that easy to get. However, if anyone out there has a pink vinyl test of the Taang! pressing, I’m pay you pretty much whatever you want for it.

I feel BETRAYED that none of my VN friends posted my auction

…therefore I must be my own CHAMPION! Ug. So yeah, my posting has slowed down some. Work and all that. You know how it is. I was going to email Morgado to post about my auctions, but he is probably too busy drawing shirts and whatnot. So I will take matters into my own hands. Here is my copy of the CHAMPION / BETRAYED split 7″ test press on Rivalry. Pretty low number on these, for a more “modern” test press, only 13 copies.  Mine is #6. This is definitely one of  my favorite splits ever.  A record chock full of awesome dudes playing awesome music!

I’ve got a bunch of records and stuff up now and will have more and more every week as I whittle down all of my worldly goods in favor of a more simple and spartan existence.

The Orafying Mysticle of this Ignition Test

I will now admit two things about the band Ignition. Firstly, I never managed to get into them. Believe me, I tried. I badly wanted to like this band. But after many attempts I have pretty much given up. I am almost embarrassed to admit it, but I just can’t find anything about this band’s music that makes me want to bob my head, dance, jump about, punch something or cry. I’m sure some of you out there will find this offensive, and for this I can only apologise. My loss however could be your gain, as I won’t be bidding on this test press of their ‘The Orafying Mysticle Of…’ 12″ that wakusei is selling:

My second admission is probably less contentious. It is simply that I never understood what the title of this record meant. As far as I am aware, ‘orafying’ and ‘mysticle’ aren’t even proper words (try using them in scrabble if you don’t believe me). So where did the band get the name for this record, and what is it supposed to mean? Anyone?
