Kill, this pain….

No, I’m not referring to over-eating at Thanksgiving, but I do hope everyone had a good holiday! I’m talking about this Undertow 7″ on Indecision. This was my first Undertow record, it was the record that got me into the band and it continues to still be my favorite Undertow record. Even though this is not a “real” record in the sense that it’s a collection of comp tracks, I think it happens to be some of their best songs musically as well as lyrically (esp. ‘Kill’ and ‘Everything’) and they come together really well on this EP. “Kill” is monumental, the Embrace cover sounds really natural, and fits it really well lyrically too, “Everything” and “Never” are great songs, can’t lose here! I forget where each song is from, but ‘Building’ is from “Words To Live By”, the Embrace covers LP, which  was Trustkill Record’s first release (co-released with Watermark).

This version is the orange out of 345 and is the only colored variant, yeggin is offering a decent BIN with a bidding option.

Voice Of Thousands comp LP

One more comp for this evening… the Voice Of Thousands on Conversion Records. Again on the Cleveland tip, this has good tracks from Integrity, Face Value and Force Of Habit. The rest is stuff I really don’t care much for these days (so much 90′s stuff has NOT aged well), though the Refuse song is cool youthful hardcore. They were Seattle’s answer to Crippled Youth and went on to form Undertow.

The highlight of this comp for me though is the Force Of Habit track, which features a pre-Ringworm Human Furnace and Frank 3-Gun. This is their only studio recorded track, and according to Frank they only ever played a couple of backyard party type shows (which I believe at least one of exists on video). The dark metal stylings of the ‘Worm hadn’t set in yet, and this one’s a good straightforward hardcore track in the early Integrity vein. If they had recorded a full demo or a record, I think it would probably sound a lot like For Those Who Fear Tomorrow.

Currently at a measly $2! Do yourself a favor and bid, and throw some money my friend Lui B‘s way.

cover songs…

I’m a big fan of bands doing cover songs. Whats better than a song you like, written by a band you like being done by different band you like. 9 out of 10 times its an awesome thing! Kiss is a band that I love, but most of the time when someone does a cover of a Kiss song its even better than the original. Cover of Led Zeppelin songs are the same thing for me.

When I was working at the Newbury Comics Warehouse back in 1999 I got a copy of this ep from Aaron the drummer of ISIS and I played the hell out of it! I never picked up the reissue Hydrahead did a few years ago, but now that I see how many extra songs it has on it, I probably will!

Original 1999 version with all songs written by Led Zeppelin:
1. Immigrant Song
2. Heartbreaker
3. Black Dog
4. Out on the Tiles
5. Whole Lotta Love
6. That’s the Way
7. Thank You

9. Vehicle (Boysetsfire cover)
10. In the Wilderness (Boysetsfire cover)
11. Bob Junior (original song)
12. Supernaut (Black Sabbath cover)
13. Cutting Away (Undertow cover)
14. “That’s the Way (redux)
15. “Thank You (redux)”
