A nice copy of Wire’s rare first single, complete with the eerie looking picture sleeve (which has always creeped me out.) Though all three songs appear on their debut LP, “Pink Flag,” I’m a big fan of 45′s, so it’s cool to have the best Wire song (Mannequin) on a nice LOUD 7″ single. My favorite part about these songs, and everything else on Pink Flag, is the absolutely brutal guitar tone, which sounds something akin to a Big Muff pedal being run through an AM radio.

Also of note, this single contains the original version of the song “12XU” which was later covered by the likes of Minor Threat (most famously), the Bad Brains, the Cro-Mags and others. A cool tune that straddles the line somewhere between post-punk and proto-hardcore.
