more Wrecking Crew

Mark McKay recently sold a clear vinyl copy and a green vinyl copy of the Wrecking Crew 7″. They were both mint & unplayed and they sold for a decent chunk of money (especially the clear one!). If your wallet wasnt big enough to scoop up either of those then maybe you should check out this classic black vinyl copy from rock4light. I’ve heard stories about Mark & Rev. Hank writing & drawing inside the covers of these so maybe theres a special message in the sleeve… only the winner will know!

Bastards Die Hard!

I’ve already gone on and on about how awesome PanzerBastard is and how you should all buy their records so I’m not gonna waste your time anymore. Either you’re not gonna listen to me or you already did! If you did listen and you are now aware of the awesome power of PB then you might want this special limited versoin of their demo 7″. The artwork is a rip off of the Sodom ‘In The Sign of Evil’ cover art. This was limited to only 100 copies and I’ve actually never seen one till now so I might bid on it!

curtain74 has a copy of the regular sleeve too if you want both!

the world class Wrecking Crew!

Mark McKay dug out what I think he said is his last copy of the Wrecking Crew 7″ that he put out on Vortex Records in 1988. I must admit that I’m baffled how this is still priced so low with less than 1 day to go on the auction. There was one pressing of this record, 800 on black vinyl, 100 on clear vinyl & 100 on green vinyl. Last week Mark sold a copy of the clear vinyl single and it went for $216.02, so how the hell is this one still under $20!?!

Troubled Youth

Here’s one of my favorite local records courtesy of righteeo (who I’m guessing is Mark from Slapshot since he says “I released this single”).

I had no idea the clear version was limited to 100, I traded away one of these and a test press to a friend in Japan a few years ago in a blockbuster trade to get a bunch of rare Japanese hc platters. Anyone have any idea how many green vinyl copies there are? I think I still have one of those.

This one goes out to Chippy Love

Remember when records like this and the Token Entry and NFAA LPs on Hawker were actually hard to get and cost decent money? It seems like they’re all next to worthless these days, and as a case in point you can BIN this Free For All LP for under $10 courtesy of thehonerman (who also has some other pretty good stuff up).

I always loved this comp for the extended version of Token Entry’s “The Edge”, but I think my real favorite part is the incredible guitar solo in RIP’s “Divided” — such a killer Maiden-esque epic. Also funny is how the NFAA between song banter is cut and pasted from other parts of their set (check our a video some time if you can find it).

Identity.

Hopefully I won’t open a can of worms by mentioning it, but I was thinking about the Boston Beatdown dvd the other day, and the question occurred to me: why wasn’t the full video for Wrecking Crew’s Identity put on there as a bonus feature? Clips for it turned up on that crappy Gangland episode too, you’d think someone with a copy of the full video would have youtubed it by now…

Demo Noize.

Huge ton of demos up today from gernblandsten, and as always it’s a ton of good stuff. But I think we’re showing you the best of it right here…

Can we just take a moment and gape in awe at that one before we move on?

Nah, that’s not enough.

Alright, moving on.

TJRB!

Yup. Awesomeness, as always.

Emperor’s Return

Celtic Frost seem to have come back around in popularity over the past few years, probably due to the reunion tour they did a couple years ago plus Tom Warrior’s recent books and the recent Hellhammer discography 3xLP. The first three 12″ records (Morbid Tales, Emperor’s Return and To Mega Therion) are pretty defining moments in the realm of death metal, and all three have steadily risen in price in the past few years. This one’s fully signed, which is not really my cup of tea but it’s pretty cool none the less. Good pics included with the description too.

One of my favorite things about this EP in particular is that the song Dethroned Emperor — CF basically re appropriated the riff from Diamond Head, and then the riff was subsequently re appropriated by Agnostic Front and Wrecking Crew. Read a more academic take on the whole situation here.

I Love 90s BHC As Much As The Next Local…

…but someone needs to tip bwal9189 off to the fact that these records, though rare, are not exactly big ticket items.

I won’t say it’s not worth it, but look. I’ve bought (and sold, and bought again) all of these via eBay over the past few years, and never have I paid (or made) a penny above a tenspot. Including shipping. They don’t show up that often, but if you’re patient you can get any of these for much cheaper.

(If you’re impatient and have the extra money hanging around though, then yes, this is an easy way to grab 3 rare BHC unsung classics, and you should do so at once.)

DEATH SIDE – The Will Never Die 7″

The final installment in one of the finest legacies in Japanese hardcore. Death Side released two lp’s and three 7″s in about a 7 year span, and all of them are classics. This one’s probably my 2nd favorite of the 7″s, behind All Is Here Now, but all of their releases are top-shelf metal-tinged hardcore that has never really been equaled. Rumor has it their 2nd LP cost so much money to produce that it put Selfish Records out of business. Singer Ishiya currently (or formerly, they may have broken up?) fronts Forward, and in addition to having one of the illest mohawks ever, is one of the coolest people I have ever spent 7+ hours in a van with. Guitarist Chelsea recently passed away, but can be found doing his other-worldly shredding on all of Paintbox’s releases.

Fun facts: This 7″ was released by Devour Records—which was actually based in Boston at the time—and is one of the few Japanese HC records that had been released in the states up to that point. Label chief Yasu Koketsu can be found on the insert (and sampled in the last groove of side 2) of the Wrecking Crew Balance of Terror LP, listed as “spiritual adviser”. I bought this record off of him at Below Zero Records, which was a short lived shop in Boston’s South End that carried only the finest in underground hardcore vinyl. I once passed up both (Portland) Lockjaw 7″s there, for $10 each, in favor of a 2nd press Turning Point 7″. FAIL.

Vortex Records presents…

montropolis has a bunch of stuff up for sale including some cool Rorschach vinyl.

This is the debut 7″ from Bostons Wrecking Crew. I already talked about Keith Bennett in a post last week but I’ll mention again that if you havent heard PanzerBastard, you should check them out!

This 7″ was put out by Vortex Records, the lable started by Mark McKay from Slapshot. The seller says that he bought this at the record release show in 1988 and if I remember correctly, even though Wrecking Crew was from Boson, that show was in New York. I remember a story about Mark & Reverend Hank driving the vinyl up to NY for the show and hand writting assorted messages inside the sleeves.

Bennett, Bean, Spillberg & Lauria

alternative-choice is offering you lots of choices in various forms of entertainment!

in 1995 members of Supahead, Wargasm, Wrecking Crew and Slapshot got together and formed a Boston hardcore supergroup. The 4 dubbed this supergroup BITTER! Its fast, its angry and its awesome!

Lost & Found Records put out the Bitter full length (on CD only) and the ‘No Miracle’ 7″. I’ve always found it odd that it was only released on red vinyl since it came out around the same time as the Slapshot/Ignite split which came out on blue, red, yellow, lime green, clear green, white & black vinyls (with assorted color center lables).

I highly recomend this 7″ but you should also get the full CD even if its just to check out their cover of the F.U.’s ‘Young Fast Iranians’!

Some tasty platters

Today’s theme is… four-song 7″ records with hand drawn covers that were culled from previous releases/recordings.

1. Wrecking Crew – s/t ep
IMO, the four best songs from Wrecking Crew’s ’88 demo pressed to wax, and released on Mark from Slapshot’s Vortex label. Troubled Youth is one of the hardest ever outta Boston, and when they coupled it live with the intro to Black Sabbath (the song, by the band), you’re moshing. Only 1000 of these were pressed and though the seller states “few made w/ red cover”, the red sleeve is actually the most common (there are also gray sleeve/black vinyl, green sleeve/green vinyl, and white sleeve/clear vinyl versions).

2. Token Entry – Ready Or Not ep
Back when Token Entry still had Anthony Communale on vocals, they set out to record an LP (I believe for Ratcage Records) in 1984. Apparently the results weren’t too hot, so they scrapped six of the 10 tracks, and used the other four for this self released 7″. The songs here are great rockin’ melodic hardcore, though they would all later appear on their first LP, From Beneath The Streets, in more straight up hardcore form with Timmy Chunks singing. Supposedly only 500 made, this one doesn’t turn up much.

3. Underdog – s/t ep
Like the Wrecking Crew ep, this here record is actually just select tracks from the band’s first demo. I love everything about this record—great tunes, great art/aesthetic—a real complete package. A great example of why I’ll always think 7″s are so much cooler than LPs.

Bastards Die Hard!

PanzerBastard is the current project from the Boston hardcore legend that brought you (or helped along) Wrecking Crew, Bitter & Ramallah… the one & only Mr. Keith Bennett!

PB is kind of like if Motorhead met Metallica at a Boston hardcore show with a bunch of punks at it and decided to try and play blast beat songs.

the band formed in 2006 and this CD compiles their ‘Boston’ Demo 7″ and their split with Gyalazat as well as some other songs including a cover of ‘Ace of Spades’.

I highly recomend you check this out!!
