I grew up listening to a lot of different music. Perhaps it was my upbringing, perhaps it was my desire to hear something a little different.
I was big into Wax Trax for a while. I bought all sorts of albums from Ministry to Young Gods to Pigface to KMFDM. I bought anything that was even remotely similar, including My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult. Obviously, it wasn’t all good. But every now and then a nugget of excellence would slip through.
Pailhead was one of those nuggets. I had heard Minor Threat and Fugazi before, but had never even heard of Pailhead (pre internet days, folks). I begged and pleaded to get the Black Box set one year for Christmas. I was lucky and got one. This made me very happy. Hearing Pailhead and reading their story made me even happier. It was a welcome crossover to the hardcore world I so enjoyed.
After the Black Box, my interest in that style of music quickly waned. It just wasn’t fresh enough, and was much too mechanical sounding. I stopped listening to all of those bands all together while focusing on hardcore. I think I made the right choice.
