Boston Hardcore And Punk Factsheet

Correct me if I’m wrong, but this little zine was the brain child of Chris Bridge 9**. I remember he would hand these out at gigs, before the interent was HUGE: late 90s, early 2000. Each zine had a listing of upcoming shows and short interviews with bands. You can see the covers. Right Brigade, Fastbreak, The Ducky Boys, The Explosion, Daltonic, … I seem to remember theere was also a Dropkick Murphy’s zine. I think these grew out of the B9′s release zine, but can’t back that up. Either way, you can get 5 great reads from xmaulx.

** I just reviewed the images closer and saw it says “Bridge Nine Presents …” Great, that means my memory doesn’t suck as much as it thought it did. Grab these. They are a great read.

Septic Death(wish) Karaoke

Another one in the Great Tre McCarthy Record Purge of ’10 (which I assume will carry on into 2011)…

This is a great idea for a record — take instrumental versions of old hardcore songs, record your own vocals over them, and release it as a “karaoke” ep. When I first heard this record I was scratching my head at how they were able to replicate that terrible Septic Death snare drum sound, but it all made sense when I finally put two and two together. I think A2 might have added some guitar licks too, but I haven’t spun this in ages so I don’t remember exactly. Oh yeah, the zine is cool too. Great picture of Tony Erba getting ill for Project X, and some good shit talk from Frank 3-Gun. I also always loved the style of Bloodbook, with that cool two-color xerox printing and good cut and paste layout.

At one point I owned the acetate to this 7″ but traded it away for some Brazilian hardcore goodies. I probably should have waited for the Integ bubble to inflate itself back up again and sold it, but such is life.

Reading Is Fundamental: Title Fight Edt

In an continuing effort to make you smarter, we bring you more words worth reading. This time around, we have 2 issues from the Title Fight Quarterly zine. You know you want to read what these dudes have to say. Courtesy of pubdist99 and apalmer9019, you now have a chance. I now you slept and didn’t order them, or grab one when you last saw them. No, you were probably too busy drooling over Ned’s cool shirt. Or if you are Morgado, you were too busy stage diving. Hey, it happens. We know that. But grab these. Read up. Get learned. But if you insist on listening to their vinyl instead, hit up their bigcartel page. Grab some items. Dumb if you don’t grab that panther longsleeve …

Open Your Eyes

statement-of-pride has a good batch of late 80s/early 90s zines up, mostly of the sxe variety. Open Your Eyes was one of the best of the time period — cool bands, good graphics/layouts, lots of content etc etc. They cranked out three issues and a couple of really cool cassette comps during their brief existence, all of which are very much worth owning. I know they were in Seattle, and I want to say there was a Botherhood connection, but I don’t remember off the top of my head. Contents are pretty self explanatory from the covers, have at ‘em.

Subruban Voice

Nice little collection of Suburban Voice issues here, spanning the later 80′s to the early 90′s. Always a quality read with great coverage of all the top punk/hc/metal bands of the era, with Al Quint’s always-positive writing (I’ve rarely seen a bad review in any issue of SV). This lot would be a nice way to fill out some missing issues, or to start a new collection.

Touch & Go

Now that there’s a compilation book of all the old Touch & Go zines, I predict more old issues are going to start surfacing like these. There aren’t too many made of the pre-hardcore era issues, so I can see the prices getting pretty out of hand. Here are issues #5 and #8 from ’79-’80, the latter being cool for having the original cover image to the 2nd Fix 7″.

Great Reads, Courtesy of The LOC Crew

Oh shit. Nothing better than a good zine on a cold, shitty day. Grab one of these zines from redscrollstore, a cold coke zero, some chips and hummus, and you have yourself a great fucking day. The mid 2Ks were a great era for zines in general, and the Lockin Out Crew wasn’t about to miss that boat. These zines are filled with great stories, interviews and as the seller describes it “tom-foolery.” These are a great example of the power of the LOC.

Lockin Out Records Number One Fanzine Issue #1. Just a great start. t.A.T.u n00dz, Chris Corry stories, and an excellent Crunchtime tour diary. A great start to a short lived zine. It had everything one could expect from the wacky mind of Greg Mental.

Lockin Out Records Number One Fanzine Issue #2. Oh man, continuing the glory. This one was a constant bathroom reader zine in a few apartments I lived in. A great go to zine. A definite favorite.

What do you know about Trumbull Escapades? Life is good in this world. Owen and Sami kept it real and have expanded their enterprises. Dumb if you aren’t reading http://trumbullisland.com on the regular. You honestly never know what you’re going to get. I’m feeling it. This one bangs back to July 2004. So good.

Trumbull EscapadesJuly 2005. Another great read. This one was a constant in my car. Each interview/story is pretty short and compact. I would pull it out at long red lights and just laugh my ass off. There is a great AIM conversation with this random chick. If that doesn’t have you laughing, you better get your health checked. Such a good read.

Title Fight Zine?!?!

Whoa, what’s this? A Title Fight zine? How have I never heard of these? And why is the seller’s description so weak. It really offers me nothing. Can someone clear this one up for me? I can assume they are from the last year or two, but that’s all I’ve got. Someone give me the lowdown!

Forced Exposure #5

Boston had a pretty good run of hardcore zines in the early 80s, between Forced Exposure, xXx and Suburban Voice. Early issues of FE might be the most legendary, since after 5 issues of full-on hardcore coverage, they switched over to mostly underground/experimental/noisy type stuff, leaving these early issues in short supply and high demand. Not to mention the content is killer, so they command a pretty good price.

So here’s #5, from 1982. Due to the Misfits content, this one usually gets plenty of fiendish bidding. The ‘Fits interview is pretty classic in its own right though — lots of shit talk on the Dead Kennedys and Maximumrocknroll, funny fight stories, and Glenn talking about making videos: “We want heads to explode and blood. How are they (MTV) going to show that?” (note: the “smudging” referred to in the auction is a print defect on all copies, so don’t let that discourage you)

Also short interviews with Youth Brigade, the Effigies, DOA, Kilslug and DYS. The DYS interview is hilarious and has some classic lines like “Dave likes the Exploited, he’s a loser” and “We must have it known that DYS is not a fag band” (and pics of Dave Smalley with liberty spikes). Also a good shit talking editorial on NYHC, lots of LOL’s.

DAMAGED GOODS zine #7 (1981)

Cool early hardcore zine outta NYC, published by Misguided drummer Lyle Hysen. Not sure how many issues he did, the highest copy I’ve seen is #9. DG was also responsible for releasing what many would call the first official “New York Hardcore” record, the Heart Attack God Is Dead 7″.

This issue has short spreads on the Bad Brains and Undead, some scene news and a smattering of record reviews. The cover is great Bad Brains art by Donnel G. of Th’ Influence (another all-black early NYC band, if anyone has ANY recording by this band please contact me!) At any rate, these are virtually impossible to find now, so the $19.99 BIN is not a bad deal for a nice piece of vintage NYHC ephemera.
